Anyone out there know what hardware should be included with the Yamaha skid plate part # SMA-8FA34-00-BK for an 07 Apex GT? I bought the skid plate off of Boats.net and they did'nt ship the mounting hardware. They want me to ship the plate back to them so they can ship out a new one with the hardware. What a pain in the A..

skid plate

it uses 4 rivnuts
they are inserts that set into holes that you drill and there is a special bolt and nut tool that squeezes them into the hole that you drill. then just regular nuts.i got one and drilled the exsisting rivits out of the bulkhead were the instructions showed and installed the rivnuts and when i went to install the skid plate the holes were off by almost 1/4" and the 2 front holes were not far enough apart to match the ones in the front nose. almost like the skidplate had shrunk a little when it was molded.anyway i now have 4 rivnuts installed in the bulkhead of my sled and no skid plate.
if you could find a supplier for the rivnuts and the tool to press them into the bulkhead you would be good to go.
hope this helps.

They are a Pain in the A** ti do the first time. I bought mine used with no kit. What I did was what a engineer here recommended.
In fact there are two layers of metal to go through for a total of what I roughly measure as 5mm.. The specs for the 14.73 long AVK A-L insert(rivnut) that they send with the kit, state that the material thickness range is up to 4.2mm. What that tells me is that they are simply not long enough. So, if you wish to stick to using rivnuts, or replace your falling out rivnuts, the answer is to get the next size longer, the 17.27 long rivnut which is good for up to 6.6mm material thickness. Fits in your original hole. I ordered a package of 25, part number 94020A387, from McMaster-Carr for roughly 14 dollars plus 4 dollars shipping. Order online.
I made the tool like this guy did and it worked great.http://www.fjr1300.info/howto/rivnut-tool.html

Heres the link to McMasters Rivnuts that work well. $10 including shipping Actually I caught the bottom rivnut on something and it ripped apart some and bent bad but it didn't let go. I had to put a new one next to it in a new hole. I found this out when I went to change the oil.
What's the odds of something catching on the lip of the nut and ripping it back?

The holes do not line up well at all and I refused to drill the areas that the rivnuts were supposed to go. Instead I drilled in the areas that I felt were secure and used stainless steel screws with washers and nuts from the inside out of the bottom of the sled. I then attached the skid to the existing threads with a large washer and bullet nuts. Worked great!!

I had the same problem. Only difference is my holes were only off by about half a rivnut. So what I did was just make the holes in the skid plate bigger and moved the skid plate holes. The rivnuts I got were bigger than the predrilled holes in the skid plate already.

Just go to home depot and get a bunch of these rubber wellnuts. Work 100x better. I've been using them for 2 seasons now with 0 issues.

Another option is to use a 1/4" tap to create threads. Buy 4 1/4" 20 phillips and call it good.

So let me get this straight.

I have to drill and install these rivnut things in order to get the skid plate installed?

I thought this was a direct "bolt on" type of thing.

How necessary is a skid plate? LOL

I WOULDN'T ride without 1! check out your motor's oil pan how close it is to your pelly pan! 1 rock, stump or anything hitting under that pelly pan is enough to rupture the pan and pour its guts/oil and by the time LOW OIL comes on your SEIZED up and in for BIG $$$$$$ to repair. my.02 :o|

Would these work in the same size holes made for the hardware originally provided by Yamaha? I went to install my skid plate today and wrecked every rivnut while trying to install them... what a sh*ty setup.

Edit: Nevermind... see that there's an assortment of sizes and one in particular that pretty much fits the 10mm hole I had to drill for the skid plate install. Thanks for the suggestion - looks like these have a lot more versatility.
