Get a Ram mount.

I just picked up a Ram mount system for my Garmin e-trex. They actually have 2 different handlebar mounts - one uses a u-bolt type clamp, and the other one uses hose clamps. The u-bolt one will work on apex/attak bars, the other one is way too wide. BTW, I'm actually going to return the Ram system, even though it looks pretty good. I made an adapter mount to use the Garmin handlebar mount.
what did you make for an adaptor?im no machinest

If I had a digital camera, I'd take a picture of it, but unfortunately, I don't. I basically made a "split collar" out of some 5/8" thick aluminum. I bored a 15/16" hole in a square piece, drilled and tapped some holes to clamp it together, and then cut it in half. I put some rubber material inside the hole to give some grip to the bars. I then bolted a piece of 1/4" by 1" flat aluminum to the "collar", and then bolted a piece of 7/8" round stock to the end of that. The problem with using the Garmin mount directly on the bars is that it's too wide, and you really need to get farther away from the bars because of the pad in the center. The flat stock was about 2" long to move away from the pad. If you aren't a machinist, or have access to the necessary machinery, I would suggest getting the Ram mount. It's actually 3 seperate pieces. One part mounts to the bars and has a ball on it. The second part is the cradle that holds the GPS. The third piece is a "stalk" that connects the other 2 parts together, and allows adjustability. I bought the set-up at Cabela's, I think it was about $65 - $70 for the 3 pieces.

Ram Mount stalk
Ram Mount stalk..... If you are talking about the flexible metal piece that is about 5 inches long...I used it for about 5 rides and it broke due to flexing back and forth. I think I am just going to velcro mine to the sled this year.

Funny, I just answer the same question on HCS.

Good to know the stalk is not reliable, seemed like a good solution. I've had no problems with my Ram mount.

There are several other solutions TY guys have posted such as mounted to the gas cap, mounted to riser and other handlebar setups.

Here's you first problem: Garmin doesn't make the Explorist 500...that's a Magellan product. So I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to mount here...
I have a Garmin Etrex. I bought Garmin's "marine mount" and bolted it to the dash (3 nuts/bolts drilled through the panel on the Apex that has the accessory jack and key in it). The marine mounts are far more secure than their double-stick-tape-on automotive dash mounts.
But if you actually have a Magellan product, Garmin info is useless to you and I don't know about the products that are offered for it, but these guys do:

Once you find a good looking mount, buy it new off Ebay for 1/2 price. The RAM mount is a universal system that will fit...not made by either brand. I have no experience with it but obviously others here seem to like it.
