I love the sled but the rear suspension is the worst long travel rear I have ever driven. SD makes a good rear skid. I have called Hygear three times and have thought about their work. It will take a lot of money to get it near a SD skid. So I am thinking of putting a sc10III into it. I have in the past put a prox into my rx1, but sold it before I had a chance to test. What are everybodies thoughts on this. Thanks rich

work on some adjustments n the suspension, it's not as bad as you say.
I have tried just about every combo of adjustment and it still bottoms, hard. When I first sit on it it feels stiffer than the 03 440 rev I had. The rev never hit bottom. The person I spoke with said I could make it comparable but not equal to a doo, cat, or poo skid. It would be cheaper to install a better skid. Compared to other sleds that I have had or sleds my family has , yes it is that bad. The rest of the sled is great.

If it bottoms as hard as you say, you're doing something wrong.......I go over 3 bills with all my gear and the only thing I did to my '06 (prior to the lengthening 2 weeks ago) was add the so called "big boy" spring.....and I still have several clicks left on the rear shock. And trust me, we can get some SERIOUS bumps here in the U.P.
Lengthen the sucker to 136" and it gets even better. YMMV!!!

Do you have bump stops on the skid?
Do you have bump stops on the skid?
sled is all stock except for skis and a different riser set up. For just basic trail riding the skid is good. when going fast through moguls the skid seems to just lack rebound and then the last bump it will bottom hard. It also bottoms hard on some unexpected bumps and real hard on dips. Seems real strange because when I sit on the sled it is stiff. A progressive shock is kind of what I am looking for. I have also been told that the design of the skid causes this. Hygear has spent a bunch of time on this skid. I want to see if anybody else has any of their upgrades before dumping $. I am also thinking of the sc 10 3
skid
I'm with Buddah on this, something isn't right. My son has an 06 Nitro and getting it stiff isn't an issue. I have a Vector with the same skid. If you want more rebound and bottoming resistance move the anti bottoming stops to the rear position. That makes the spring progressive and will stop it from bottoming.

i feel your pain yamadoo... i have the same problem with my '06 nytro. stiff as a board through the studder bumps but as soon as you throw it into a big roller or something similar its like its not even there. it will bottom out on both sides a bump going in and going out. it also bottom out at times when you would think it would not. last weekend it bottomed out so bad it threw me onto the hood. pioneer performance has recognized the problem and offers a package deal rebuild respring and revalve to make it more bearable in the rough stuff.

"'06-'07 NYTRO & '07-'08 APEX RTX
The Nytro and RTX are designed as a bump sleds, unfortunately they seem to only handle small bumps well. We have an excellent package for the rear of these sleds which includes changing the internal pistons (valve pistons), valve shim stacks, and center shock spring. This combination turns the Nytro & '07 RTX into excellent bump sleds. The small bump ride is more compliant, while soaking up the larger bumps much better with less bottoming, along with greatly reduced "kick back". Our test Nytro with this suspension setting along with a heavy stabilizer bar and performance clutch kit is a blast to ride. This combination of shock re-valve, piston, and center shock spring retails for $209.95. "

i also have the torsion springs all the way up and the preload two clicks from being all the way in. local yamaha dealer says they have had alot of complaints about the rear being way to soft on these sleds
rear skid
The torison spring adjusters set ride height not bottoming resistance. If you adjust them all the way up are you adjusting the gap at your transfer rods? This distance determines when your center and rear couple. If you go up and don't adjust the gap you run the risk of slamming through your travel. Some of the sleds came with the anti bottoming adjusters and some didn't and some took them off but if used they make your rear springs progressive. I believe they should be used and get the shock set/valved right. HyGear uses them for their set ups. They are very knowlegable.

I set the rear springs to "sit in". Was not much differeance between S,M, H though. I have heard people say "just go to the next setting, H" I know that is not going to help. I have adjusted t-rods as well. It just seems to blow through the travel on big bumps, dips or if I want to pop the sled over a bump, it will bottom hard upon landing. None of my past sd's have done this. Just a frustrating problem on my first new Yamaha.
As far as what I have read the anti bottomers were not on the nytros and have heard the shocks were not designed for them. This resulted in some not so good kickback.
Geezer2, Do you have any experience with Hygear? What have you done with your skid? How do you ride and what is your weight?
A typical situation happened over the weekend with a person who had a 06 nytro: "No, I never bottom, the sled is really stiff. " I decided to follow this person for many miles, Well that person should have been on a vector gt, not a nytro. Second time I have had an experience like this. When ridden hard the sled bottoms to easy, especially for a sled that is marketed the way it was.

06 vector 8000miles.. seems to bottom much easier now then when new, am going to do something but not sure what yet. If I add a stiffer spring will that just have a tendancy to have more kick back?? Have the adjuster maxed.
rear skid
My son's 06 Nitro did not come with the stoppers either but we put a set on.
If you install the anti bottoms in the forward position it changes the spring to slightly stiffer through most of the range. Moving them back makes them stiffer at a point further through your travel. My son's Nitro has way more return damping on the rear shock than does the Ohlins on my Vector but maybe it's still not enough if people say there is too much kickback. If used in the rear hole I would think it would be so stiff when you hit it that it would hit you in the a**.
I installed a HyGear dual rate spring set up on the center shock and have Ohlins on both the rear and center. I also installed the torison spring spacers. This year mine to seems too soft and I noticed that I have lost the adjustability on the rea so I sent it out for repair and re-valve but I won't be riding again until next year.
When I ride with the guys we hit it pretty hard but this year all my trips were with the wife and I'm nursing a bad back so I never hit it hard, always looking for smooth this year. I'm 185 without gear. Wish I could be of more help but I would trust either HyGear or Pioneer to help.

All I will say is get rid of the Yamaha skid. Find what you know is better and put it in.
With all of the bottoming that these skids tend to do you'd better get it fixed or you'll be left holding the bag when stuff starts to break.

I have the same skid in my Vector, and it works well with some tuning. I ended up with the heavy springs, and Ohlins in the skid.
My suggestion is to call Bruce at Pioneer Performance. That guy is a Yamaha suspension Guru. Closely connected to the factory for info. I ordered my shocks from him, put them in almost 3500 miles ago, and never looked back. He changed some valving and the spring on the Center before he sent them. Every one that I know from here in AK that calls him is happy. And we are grumpy from the long winters. lol
I was well over 300lbs when I had him do this. I am now down to 180, Left it the same except now got the springs set on the light setting.
I can tell you we are just starting to learn what a groomer is up here. When I hit a smooth trail I get scared cause we r still learning.
