Question on stock clutching concerning an '07 APEX RTX. My observation has been that the secondary does not backshift completely to where the belt ride height is proper (1 - 1.5 mm above sheaves). It consistently will stop at approximately 1/4 - 3/8 of an inch below while free-wheeling to a stop on a track stand. If I manually jerk the belt backwards to achieve proper belt heighth, the deflection is not correct (the belt is too tight). A very heavy creep exists. Also, upon inspection, the secondary spring pre-load was set at 2-6 and not what I assume is correct 3-3 based on the '06 clutching given nothing has changed for '07. So... what is the ideal belt length? Mine measure 44 7/16. Also, going from the 2-6 to the 3-3 position and winding the helix I have never seen so much pre-load on a secondary. So much as to make it nearly impossible to install the belt. I am giving it the correct twist I assume. This is an awesome site - any input would be great. Rich Kay

Actually, there are some significant changes to the 07rtx wrt 06rtx. Most significantly, the GEARING is different (10% lower), which naturally means that the clutching must also be different. I suggest you go back to the 2-6 (80 degree twist). You've got a brand new machine there with a brand new belt. Put it all back to stock, RUN IT FOR A BIT (break in the engine and the belt), then decide what (if anything) needs to be adjusted.

Thanks for the expert advice Lazy Bastard. Since they dropped the top sprocket by 1 tooth, can you list all of the significant changes to the clutching as a result of it? That's the kind of information that I'm looking for. The issue is that I have a secondary that is not completely back-shifting and just driving it with 3" of belt deflection until it gets better is not how I go about things. Rich Kay

Well, as I said, you can't make this kind of reading off a belt that hasn't been broken in. It MUST be run. Additionally, the clutches behave differently on the stand than they do on the snow. Trust me, don't mess with it until you know what it really does.
