Hey Guys hoping for some input on the 08 MTX as a mostly trail sled. I have the oppurtunity to pick up an 08 MTX with 105 miles for $5k. I work for a law enforcement agency and the sled was siezed from a drug runner in 08 and is now being offerred up for sale. I currently have an 09 XTX that I love and was thinking that I may pick up the MTX as a second/play sled. I live in VT and very close to the mtns but we do not have the same kinda mtn riding that you guys out West have. So ( Great deal aside) could I make a decent trail sled out of this sled? Should I pick it up?
Would really like to hear your opinions as I need to act fairly quickly or someone else will snag it up! Thanks

Look up yamahaboy's thread that he had. That is about what he did to his and still left it so he could ride in the deep stuff too. He has a lot of good comments about the subject in there I think. It is a beautiful sled to look at anyway.

I ride a few trails to get back into the hills and the only issue i ever had with my 08 MTX on the trails was it darted like a dirty bastard until I shimmed up the stock skies. It was fine after that. I know other people have fixxed this problem with running aftermarket carbids and replacing the stock skies all together. All in all it makes a decent trail sled. It will pushed in the corners a little more because of the longer track but that isnt a biggie. It more then makes up for that off the trail.

I have an 08 MTX.

At 5,000 it might be worth picking up and putting another bit of cash to make it work for you.

In my opinion it is well worth the money to change the front shocks to floats. You are looking around $450-$550 used or under $1,000 for new. This was probably the best money I spent on my sled.

I'd also recommend shaving the track lug down to 1.75 inches. It will really bight on the trails and you shouldn't notice any major change off trail.

You will need to address the issue of hyfax wear, especially if you will be mostly on trails. I'm guessing the best fix is going with a larger size idler wheel. + or - $200 should take care of that.

Good luck with your decision.

Cheers
