Can someone tell me what is required to install a 1.5-2 inch track with studs on a 03 shorty? Ie: do i need smaller drivers? more tunnel protection? has anyone done this?
1.5 track will fit without studs, barely. If you can get long enough studs, going to a 8 tooth driver should give you the clearance you need. 2" track will require 8 tooth drivers and/or tunnel and heat exchanger protector removal... No need for any of that anyway  Warning, the front heat exchanger protectors take some time to remove.

Like Grapeape said ,you would have to remove the tunnel protectors for a 1.5 inch track.By going to 8 tooth drivers I would not put studs with a 2 inch track. They will hit in hard places.

1.5 inch track
grapeape - are you saying for a 1.5 inch track the tunnel protectors have to be removed or is that for the studs with a 1.5 inch track?

1.5 track without studs on a shorty is tight, but works... If you add studs, the best solution is to go to 8 tooth drivers, to gain more clearance, and if using a 2" track, all protectors have to come out, or go to the 8 tooth and take out tunnel protectors.

Has anyone tried to install a 1.75" track?
I did a 1.75 as well, and on the shorty, either remove the tunnel and heat exchanger protectors(not reccommended) or switch to 8 tooth drivers.

I was trying to stay away from the 8 tooth drivers because of the expense of drivers, gearing change and the extra friction / waste of hp. Could I install a thinner protector and notch the lugs on the track where the protectors are? The track is a fully clipped Camoplast built for Polaris.
Is it a 121x1 3/4 track? If it is longer, the 8 tooth drivers will help compensate for the additional track. I am going to do a hammertime/ advantedge set up on both the 2" and 1 3/4" x 136 tracks w/8 tooth drivers. Riding my 2" last year, top end dropped off to about 105 or so, but it will climb up a tree 8) With the taller lug track, do you really need more top end? If you do notch the track, more than likely it will still rub on occasion with the exhaust heat shield. I did not do any damage to mine, but there is a small amount of rubber on it.

Sorry - I forgot to mention my setup is a 136 x 1 1/4 and has been right from when I spec'd it from the dealer. I picked the 136 x 1 3/4 for the occasional trip to the big hills or if we get dumped on locally. I ride 90 % locally. I wanted to keep the same drivers for this reason.
