Hi guys, new to the forum but been lurking for a while. I got a question. I would like to change my stock track on my 03 RX1 shorty (that I picked up a few weeks ago) and I really like the look of the Ripsaw. I've been throwing around the idea of also going to a 136". I see theres a few used tracks for sale on the board, so that could help me keep the costs down. TRACKS USA makes a really nice piece for their rail extensions for $89. Anyone used these before. Also, can I get away without a tunnel extension at least for a while. My question is, does the suspension have enough room to travel? If not, by how much?
Here's my thinking
121 to 136= 15" diff. divide by 2 for the track being round= 7.5"
Theres more than 8" from the track to the snowflap now with the 121.
So would this work?

I don't think you will get away with that. At a minimum your flap will get sucked in by the track. The ripsaw sounds like it is working out OK. I did the 136 this fall with the Hartman kit. The bumper looks better on it. I also geared down the top gear to a 23 tooth. Check out the Hartman and Mountain Performance sites for more detailed info. I chose the 9834 fully clipped track and also installed extrovert drivers on the driveshaft and had them trued as well -- no ratcheting at all and I have at least an inch of track hang below the sliders on the stand. Some interesting changes took place in the ride as follows:
1. At the same transfer rod settings as last year (which produced virtually no transfer) the machine would easily lift both skis under hard acceleration and make the front end too light to steer properly under slight acceleration in corners at slow trail speeds.
2. Needless to say the hookup is twice what the stock '03 shorty track was. 0-90 on hard pack in a blink--feels like I have 20% more HP.
3. This sled floats thru 2' of powder now, there was no way last year.
4. The ride of the rear suspension has improved because of the longer track.
5. I can't say how much top end I have sacrificed going to this longer 1 1/4" track as I haven't had a long enough stretch of hardpack to test it with all the snow we have around here now. What a great time to switch to an aggressive 136!

Here's my take on this;
Depending on what I get for warranties by my dealer (should know tomorrow, I *HOPE*), I'm 99% sure that I'm going to be able to get a new *different* track (my choice, cost of new minus value of old), and I just looked at the Hartman extensions (*much* nicer looking than MP for only $1.00 more), and will be going with 144" with suspension relocation. That should give the same ground contact as a warrior, but with the reduced approach angle, it should save on slider wear and give that extra deep snow traction. I'll be going with a 9923 (ripsaw144).

LB, I'd be reluctant to change the front mounting position of the skid if that is what you meant. Extending the back I think would be great. If you extend the front to decrease the approach angle you may get into a position where you have too much weight on the skis without being able to compensate enough with the limiters and front suspension shock. To try to compensate that way could make the front of the rear suspension too hard. The 144" might help that out some though. I was going to go that way with the 136" and was advised against it by the fellows at mountain performance. The lower approach angle would be OK for mountain sleds where too much ski pressure is not often an issue but not desirable according to them. At the time they had no feedback from flatlanders who went that route. Can I ask why you are going 144" instead of 136"?

The more track you have, the longer it lasts, the better it grips. Thats 2 positives. Its my observation that this sled has a hard time getting enough ski pressure, I've got my limiters sucked *way* in. Relocating the skid backwards will give a more consistent and more controllable ski pressure with the limiters out where they should be.

Hope it works out for you. Keep us posted when you're done.

First yamaholic I really liked my shorty, but I love the sled with the longer rails and 1.25 9834 track, I can't imagine that you woulldn't either. I haven't ridden a sled with just the rail extensions, I have my doubts about ride improvement, but you would get better hookup.
Hey LB I would just want to say that I have an 02 Mountain Max 700 that has the lower approach angle and a 2" paddle and is a 141, rides like a stretch limmo, but be warned if you come into a corner to hot, you will sometimes find yourself on the wrong side of the trail and headed for the puckers, doesn't always happen, but does happen way to often. but of course outstanding in the deep stuff.

Well, first thing is I'm going with 1.25 track, second is that this sled is heavier out front (keep the front on the snow). Being that there's no significant down in the steering on the Warrior (which has the same footprint as this will have), I have to believe that it will steer at least as well as a Warrior, just so long as I have the suspension set right. Also, those MM (judging from the pictures) have skis with very little bite.
