I know that there was a topic on here about this but I just wanted to see if I needed a t-40 torx bit for the plug on the bottom of the motor I have heard that the plug is really hard to get out? and a t-30 for stripped out screws on the bottom of the plate that comes off of the sled? also for being the first change is there any special secrets to make it easier/ how much time am I looking at? I know that I have lots of questions Sorry Guys!
ps I would rather do it than pay the dealer I dont need to second guess my work :ORC192 Woodys

It's just alittle time consuming your first go at it. The battery bracket is a pain but you are right you are better off doing it yourself. You will have to practice these words though #@%$, *&%$, #!*%$ cuz you will be using them when you try to get the oil filter off. Good luck

i have yet to do my first change on my sled yet, but i need to pretty quick.. coming up on the 500 mile mark..
it cant be any worse than trying to wrangle the filter out of my Mark VIII...

Its an allen not sure of the size. A torx could work in an emergeny but not on the first change..those people at the factory love the locktite
flip the sled on its side, makes the job much easier when trying to get everything unfastened. Just took my battery tray off for the first time ... have to replace the A arms cause of a crash.. just be patient and have lots of light to see whats going on in there.

On my 05 it was a 5mm allen for the plate on the bottom and 6mm allen for the drain plug(no torx bit on mine). The oil drain bolt(6mm) was very tight .I used a cheater bar on the allen wrench.Make shure you use a good quaility allen wrench set(mine are bondhus brand)or get a 3/8 drive socket with a 6mm allen attached to it.
The oil filter is just a real pain,I think I couldve swapped out a cylinder and piston on my polaris in the same amount of time as the oil and filter change

5MM Allen For the tray under your sled
6MM Allen for the bottom of your motor, check to see that the brass washer is still good or change it. Tighten it down to 22ft lbs
The Torks help when they are stripped a T-30 for the tray & T-40 for the motor. If all fails a sharp chisle and two good raps with a hammer along the edge and it's off.
Remove both both bolts for the battery tray, undue battery strap, slide off the cover, undue the two leads and pull out the battery. Then take the right hand side of the tray and lift it up while pushing the left down becareful of the wires and it's out. Turn the ski's to the left and unscrew the filter, a Marine or quad filter remover will work a little easier. It's a piece of plastic half of the lenght of your filter with a end for your ratchet if you need it. Mech gloves work really well for this. Put a small amount of oil on your finger and rub it around the rubber ring on the filter so when you put it on it's not dry. Tighten it down and put everthing back to gether and your good to go. Start it up and let it run for two minutes and check your oil level.
Max Perf has a cool kit I picked up for relocating the oil filter, it mount right up on the motor. Fits right below the ECP Filter kit on the right and the filter mounts vertically. 8) 8)

I can't believe the owner's manual says the filter is good for 12,000 miles. It would be foolish to leave it in there that long.

Just a question, but for those of you that have paid the stealer to change the oil, how much did they rape you? Just for comparison I asked the dealer I bought my sled from how much they charged when I needed my first change, and I was quoted $140!!! Thats a joke for an oil change. That was for the oil and filter.

Sort of makes the filter relocation kit pay for itself doesn't it?

went to work on it last night, the only thing that really worries me is that the battery bracket is welded to the frame? should i bend that ? will it be okay? other than that it is pretty straightforward, thanks for the info guys!

How did your battery bracket end-up welded to the frame? There should be a bolt on each-side along the frame, and two bolts near the CDI box. 12mm I think?

 It is welded at the top of the battery bracket to a bar that comes across? is that not normal ? oh no I can make room for the wrench to get down in there! I cant remove the whole tray without cutting it off at the top?
