2001 yamaha venture deluxe two up no spark

my buddies sled wont start after sitting all summer. no spark to any of the spark plugs 700 triple. took the starter recoil housing cover off, cleaned all the flywheel cover and pick up coil. check for voltage coming out of the pins, nothing thinking the stator is defective, any ideas, check the on /off kill switch working ok, any ideas or suggestions? how do you check the stator, what are the ohm readings etc. We checked to see if any cables had been damaged by mice, did not see any damage, the sled was working fine when he put it away last spring. sled is a 2001 Yamaha venture 700 deluxe two up.

Sure sounds like the stator went south or maybe the CDI in the infamous "rub thru" under the motor. My first guess would be the stator. Went thru 2 stators on my 97 red head
I know there is info on this on the 2smoke side. Just took a peak on the FAQ page but couldn't find the info.
If you can post over there. I'm sure someone still has the spec sheet.

Check the relays too. That was a common problem.

took another look at the machine today, ohmed out the pick up coil got 4,000 ohm, had continuity on the leads to the stator, not sure what is supposed to be?. hooked the volt meter to the leads off the stator, meter climbed a/c did not get the peak reading but it did climb. still no spark on any of the plugs. ohm out the on/off switch ok, ohm reading on throttle position sensor was 41 ohms.no fluctuation from open throttle to closed throttle, stayed at 41 ohms constant, switch going to the carburetor rack was bypassed, not sure why, ohmed it out and still no fire. are there resistors on the spark plug wires that may be gone? my buddy want to take it into the yamaha dealer. I am thinking its the pick up coil, supposed to be around 189 ohms. also ohmed out the on / off kill switch all ok. continuity when pressed down. any ideas?

checked for voltage going to the head light while turning over the engine by hand, no voltage, I thought the headlight would try to go if you pulled over the engine, nothing. also my buddy has the battery out of the sled, does this make a difference, he replaced the battery last year and said it died so he took it out, not sure why, should start without the battery if you pull it over by hand, is that correct. does the battery have to be in the sled for things to work properly , even if the battery is dead.

Install a battery.

It does need a battery in that sled as it does not have the smoothing capacitors the non e start sleds have.
