I have 2006 RS Rage. I bought it used. When I got the sled the oil resivoir in the air box had silicone around it. I also noticed alot of oil in the air box and a slight modification under the air box. The valve that conects to the oil drain hose was changed.
So I did not pay alot of attention to this. I cleaned it up changed the oil and filter. I ran the sled for about 1/2 hr and the air box filled up
with oil again!!
Brought it to the local yamaha dealer. The told me that the modification under the oil resivoir was causing the problem. Ok..ordered a new air box and put it on. Checked/added a little of oil and ran the engine again for about 1/2 hr. The box filled up again. Now I don't know what to do.
The delaer thinks that there is a check valve at the engine area that is not allowing the oil to circulate??? I have no idea.
Can anyone shed some light on this for me?
Also..why is there an oil resivoir in the air breather..why was it not made like the RX1?
Thanks

This is only a start. The engine holds exactly three litres of oil. When you change the oil, pour one litre down the top of the engine through the cap at the top of the engine and the other two litres in the resivour holding tank. Don't forget, when you drain the oil, to drain the oil plug next to the filter. If oil still leaks into the air box, then there is another problem per your dealer or from from another source on these pages. MiKe/Eden Vt. 05 Vector

Thanks for the info. When I changed the oil...that is the way I did. I change the oil on my RX1 the same way.
I'v tired to locate on this site people who have had the same issue....but no luck.
Thanks again..

Had basicly the same problem on 2006 Vector with oil flowing into air box then onto garage floor. Dealer had to remove valve cover and found gasket/seal out of place at timing chain area. They cleaned this area and cemented gasket/seal back in place, not a problem since.Vectornut said:This is only a start. The engine holds exactly three litres of oil. Note: When doing a oil change. After oil is drained from engine crank case, sump tank and all drain plugs and new oil filter are in place. You first the fill sump tank with 2 quarts of oil and run the engine for a couple of minutes. Shut engine off and then fill this sump tank until oil level is in the hatched area of dip stick.
Never heard of filling the engine with oil at cap on top of of the engine.

The sled is going back to the dealer this week and I will print the post and bring it to them.
If anyone else can shed some light on this problem...pls post

According to my Yamaha dealer-the reason for pouring one litre down the top of the engine at the top cap,is to prevent Dry Starts after pouring the remaining oil into the resivour. There is a short pickup period when starting the engine. Also, It's the the only way to assure you have the correct amount of oil in the engine. Using the dip stick is not an accurate way to assure you have the correct amount of oil. A little too much oil always seems to end up into the air box. 05 Vector Mike Hayden,Eden, Vt.
