2005 Yamaha Rage RS
Hello,

Desperately searching for some help to resolve the issue of the CDI box and coils blowing. I thought I had this resolved with a new CDI box and new coils - replaced them and it fired up instantly.

Also replaced the stator with a Yamaha stator last winter to prevent any issues on the trail.

Took it for a mile or so ride, and noticed it dropped a cylinder. By the time I got it back, it was definitely only on two cylinders. I took it to the shop since I was stumped and had checked all the voltages/ohms in the shop manual. They essentially told me what I already knew, CDI box and a coil was dead.

Before I buy another set of coils and CDI box I was hoping to resolve the actual cause for them blowing. I have noticed a few other threads on this in the forum, but no one comments on what the resolution was.

I am assuming its a bad ground or short somewhere - any help / advice would be great.

It is because you are using the wrong coils.

I have all yamaha coils in the sled - granted some of them are used from ebay. I have noticed that if I leave the key in the "on" position the coils get very hot.

I will order a new set to eliminate that as a problem.

Voltage rectifier/regulator assy?

Replaced that as well - though I can't remember if that was a Used or off-brand replacement.
I did have the low beams blow out when I originally started having issues. I replaced this suspecting it to be the issue. The sled wouldn't start until I replaced the CDI though.

I had a vector brought to me many years ago with this exact problem. When the machine was in storage somebody swapped the coils from an rx-1(long story).
Anyway, I can almost guarantee this is your problem. The coils must be for a vector/rage, they are not the same as the four cylinder even though they are dimensionally the same.

I also highly recommend staying with the OEM coils.
Nothing wrong with used, just be sure they are from the same engine.

Sorry to go missing for a bit - I was living in my garage last week sorting this out...Hate when posts like this aren't followed up with the solution so here goes.

I ended up finding someone with a blown-up vector, purchased the CDI box, harness, coils, and voltage rectifier. I started taking the harness off (was just going to swap everything to make sure it worked), but found mine was in much better shape so I left it. Swapped everything else. Also completely tore apart the carbs, cleaned and replaced with new components.

When all was said and done, it fired up instantly. My thoughts on this is @74Nitro was correct on the coils causing the issues. There was one in there that did not match, I noticed that the new (used) plugs did not get hot when the key was left in the on the position as well. The voltage rectifier was fried as well, not sure how that is interlinked with the CDI from looking at the wiring diagrams, but the headlights and taillights were blown with the old rectifier attached.

Put 50 miles in up at the Sno*Drift races staying close to our property just in case, but I think all is sorted out.

Thanks for the help!
