So I got a rock or a stick jammed into my front heat exchanger...I got two options; pay someone 500 to do the whole job or 50 for the weld but I need to remove the exchanger. I believe I can get it out on my own but my question is the about the rivets, what size to drill out and what kind and size of rivets to replace them. Any help is much appreciated.

Yamaha's go to rivet seems to be 3/16 which translates to 4.7 or 4.8mm by usually 5/8 to 11/16 which is about 16.4 to 18mm. I have used a 3/16 drill bit and just drill dead centre until the head comes loose, you don't want to enlarge the hole. You can check the Yamaha Parts Finder upper right corner of this page, type in 2006, RTX, and pick frame and see if you can find a corresponding rivet for the heat exchanger. Or once you get them out just check the total metal thickness and you can determine how long you need and if the same length will do all of them. I find that Yamaha rivets are about as good as they get. The only one I have here is Yamaha # 90267-47195-00, it is 3/16 X 5/8.

I agree with gitrdone. Stay with the Yamaha rivets, they are very good quality and far superior to anything else I have came across. BTW, I have a vector front heat exchanger, not sure if it is the same though.Awesome! Thanks for the info hopefully it works out.

Are they pop rivets? Can they be reinstalled with a hand rivet gun?

I've removed suspension. And track and had them welded on sled way cheaper and less down time

Get a cheap air rivet gun. Your hands will thank you. Its not easy popping that many multi grips rivets. Are they pop rivets? Can they be reinstalled with a hand rivet gun?
When drilling out the old rivets use a center punch to knock out the steel pin. This keeps the drill bit in the center of the rivet and gives you a clean cut thru.

get the air rivet gun from princess auto, you will be really thankful later! Would def recommend the yamaha rivets, otherwise get them from Bolts +, if I remember correctly they need to be stainless steel. Do not use the rivets from princess auto, they are cheap material and not s/s. 3/16" drill bit and rivet size is right.

That’s a good idea, definitely going to get my hands on an air riveter. Any idea how many rivets there are? A guy I talk to said 54.Get a cheap air rivet gun. Your hands will thank you. Its not easy popping that many multi grips rivets.

No idea on the number of rivets. There was a thread on this last year ( maybe longer). I think in there it mentions the number and type of rivets to use. That’s a good idea, definitely going to get my hands on an air riveter. Any idea how many rivets there are? A guy I talk to said 54.
