Confused, I thought you wanted to gear down? Anyway, I used a 22/40 on my 06' RTX. I still have all the gears, actually have three, 22 Top, 40 Bottom (reverse) and a 40 Bottom (non-Reverse) if interested in trying them out.

i have 09 apex rtx..... comes with 22.... went to 23 and going to try a 24.... "ratio" going down.... going "up" 1 tooth.

Ah, thought you were the original poster. I guess in my eyes you are gearing "UP" when you are lowering ratio. Anyway, my 06' came with the 24 top, quite frankly unless you have a mile of glare ice to stretch it out, you'll never pull a 24/38. You'll get better mileage but that's about it, unless you've got power adders of coarse.

I compared the 22 & 24 on the same day on a snow packed lake. Marked the clutches & found that the primary was not shifting full out do to the conditions. The 24 however, shifted out just as far as the 22 & was still faster. Neither gear will will obtain full shift out unless on glare ice.

You won't obtain "Full" shift out with any gearing even it you put a 17/44 in. It's not the gearing your pulling, it's the clutches themselves, do some searching and you'll see why, they'll need to be cut if you want to see the wear mark hit the top of the primary.

The lower "22" gearing likely hurt your traction, When I had the 22/40 it would pull like a freight train. If the snow was heavy packed and I could actually get traction it would be tough to hold the front down, and I usually ran on the low end of transfer. You will find it more difficult to get traction with the 22 or 22/40 but it will spin the track easier which helps when rounding corners. If you were looking for top end, then well obviously it's not going to be faster on top. I found the Apex needed more lower end as I trail rode, never lake raced.

Yes Lj 452, you are correct on the cutting of the clutch to get full shift out. I should have been more specific & said you would get the most shift out your clutches will allow on glare ice, lol. I don't run glare ice & don't have picked track so it would'nt be worth it for me to have them cut.
I can't stress enough that clutching is entirely on personal preference.

Wileya: As you know, although you forget easily; I have the 23 down from 24 in an '09. It beats yours as you might recall.... Against the '06 with 24T; unless I gain the distance early; MJ's is faster on the top end, bush to bush. Gaining the distance early is all dependent upon hook up and getting on the gas early. If I wait for him to be coming...it is too late to catch him.

Inside the bush or in the short shots, the 23 is quicker. Maybe with a 24T you won't have to drive so deep into the corners. Keep in mind...the 22T will be better for getting you through the deep snow back onto the trail.

hahaha well aren't we just a big ball of laughs stroker!! thinking you should maybe go to a 24 as well, that way you shouldn't spin fast enough to get any air when crossing the road to "catch up"
