Hey guys...i was wondering if any of you have tried out a 22 tooth top gear for the 2006 apex rtx. I have the upgraded long track and was wondering your thoughts on the subject. Would i benifit from dropping another tooth ( i already dropped from 24 to 23 ). I am not too terribly concerned about top speed, i just like pep of the start.

You will be good with a 23 gear on top. I'm running the same gear in my 06 Apex Rtx 144" and have no issue.
The 07 apex rtx and up have 22-38 gearing it makes it a blast to drive on the trail but burns alittle more fuel.

There is nothing wrong with my 23/38 setup, was was just wondering what anyones experience was with the 22 bottom ( and yes i know i will also have to go to the 68 link chain)

i have the 22/38 setup. keep in mind this is also a 07 apex gt with a 144" i cant really tell you the difference between stock and what i have since i only rode stock for a half a season... lol i still get good fuel mileage even blasting down the trails. matter a fact my mileage is right there if not a little better than the 600cc ski doo i ride with...

i have both... 22/38 on my RTX and 24/38 on my 40th... in the powder or tight trails the 22/38 is good... defiantely gives more snap on bottom. i personally like the 24/38 of the 40th. so i'm sticking with it.... both sleds side by side all day long, i will get an extra 15 or so miles on the 40th before gas light comes on compaired to the RTX...
Now if i was doing all offtrail or all crosscountry i'd probably go with the 22, but i do alot of lake and higher speed running to the 24 is right were i need it to be!... my 2c

X2 on the 24/38! I geared my 07 RTX up from the 22/38 because I as well do lots of long lake runs. Didn't loose a heck of alot off the bottom but gained a bit of fuel economy + added a little speed on the top end. All depends on personal preference & riding style

so would you say it is defn worth changing the gearing from 22 - 24??? what kinda gains are we honestly talking about... and yes i know this topic has been covered and beat on a million times on here, but it just seems like the rtx is a whole different kind of sled compared to the er>....

In my opinion it was worth it for me to go from the stock 22 to the 24. My buds 06 gt was always a tad faster than mine when we would run them full out down the lake. Mine has been faster than his ever since I geared up mid last winter.
Yes this topic has been beaten to death, mostly because not everybody is looking to gain the same thing, some riders want top end, some don't care about speed, they just want to be quick & some like the corner to corner hole shots! Some say the Apex can't pull the larger 24t gear but I really don't think Yamaha would up the gearing to a 24 in the 08 RTX if the sled could'nt handle it. From my own testing, I know the sled can without a doubt, handle it. Clutches are most efficient at a one to one ratio, with that being said, even though the clutches will rarely shift all the way out unless your on glare ice, I believe the 24 would be running closer to that one to one than the 22 on lake runs. Most of what I read here on TY4S is that most people like the attack gearing of 23/38.
"Is it worth it to change from the 22 to 24"? That is totally up to you & remeber if you are gearing up to 23 or higher you will have to go to a longer 70L chain as well.

My 40th is about 6-7 MPH faster(GPS) that the RTX... now this is full throttle 2000'+ runs... i live next to a 5 mile long lake and have held both of them literally "to the bar"... now out of the hole, on a drag, my RTX will jump about 1 1/2 sled lengths and hold it them for about 1000', the the 40th will slowly walk on by.... as stated, all in the type of riding you do... i like a taller gear, for those long higher speeds, and we routinely put on 200+miles a day, so the extra milleage is where its at for me...
I ride with 3 800Etec's and of course they jump out and away from me in a drag, but for top speed the apex is still on top.

thanks for the reply's guys....... i think i am going to go up to a 24 as well.... i run with an 06 gt and he has the 24 on top and that sled handles it just fine... im looking for top end myself and feel that i shouldn't loose very much at all on bottom and mid with my upgrades.

Confused, I thought you wanted to gear down? Anyway, I used a 22/40 on my 06' RTX. I still have all the gears, actually have three, 22 Top, 40 Bottom (reverse) and a 40 Bottom (non-Reverse) if interested in trying them out.

I will be doing some ice drags this winter on my apex 121''. What gears should I use for that.

Ya I did two on the top and one on the bottom for a better hole shot. Also had allen dial in the clutch for corner to corner on my 06 gt and she pulls nice and hard now. I like it better for the twists and off the line. Don't really hit lakes that often to enjoy the apex top end anyhow.
