Warning: This mechanic is very slow and takes long breaks between progress !!!

After several years of hard riding it is time to tear this sled down and go through everything. It only has about 9K miles on it, but it has had a few tumbles during that time including an unintentional 20+ foot drop and getting too close to another sled. Ironically I wasn't the rider either time.

So here goes the tear down . . .

Broken header on #3

And now for a question . . .

Has anyone seen a bulkhead crack at this spot? It is where the steering relay rod goes through the cutout on the right side in front of the oil tank. I can't figure out how that area could be stressed that much. I will get a couple more pics and add them tomorrow too.

Has anyone seen the bulkhead crack here ???

I had a 2011 apex come in that was cracked in that exact spot. The sled took a shot on left side and bent the left bulkhead and cracked the right bulkhead. I would suggest putting arms on and measuring to see if your bulkheads are twisted.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am thinking of running long rods through the A-arm mounting holes and checking for parallelism. I am also trying to figure out a method to see if the arms are tweaked as well. I may go ahead and replace at least half of the bulkhead anyway. This project is quickly turning into a money pit, but that seems to be the norm for me. I do need to tear down the engine because it ran low on oil and developed a stumble at idle that worries me. I do see the one cracked header, but don't know if that is enough to cause the running rough or not.

I typically measure arm to rear axle on both sides. If you question if arms are bent just use one arm and and switch from side to side so bent or straight...it's a constant in your measurements.

OK thanks - that sounds like a good approach.

Just this recent season I found mine cracked in that same spot too. I can also tell it was cracked before it was powdercoated, so it's been that way for at least 5 years..
Might still pull it out this summer and TIG weld it and re-powdercoat it, but it doesn't appear to have been an issue.

Hey Nate, how you doing?

Do you have any pics of your powdercoated bulkhead?

I'm on the tap talk app on my phone now, so I don't know if I can find the thread quickly, but I have an old thread in the 4 stroke garage from when I rebuilt my sled. Did it the summer/fall of '08 I believe. Try searching for it there, otherwise I'll try to get a link posted here when I get to my shop computer later.
