2007 Attak Gt Front heat exchanger w/holes...bummer

I got into some gravel and put some holes in the front heat exchanger....Help...does anyone know what kind of job it is to replace...looks like a lot of rivets need to be drilled out.... Thanks for any help Drew
 
drop your skid and see if you can repair it on the sled,jb weld can work, for a hole put a short screw in it first. changing it is a lot of work.
 
I threw studs through my vector cooler and had a guy weld the cooler. It never leaked again.
 
welding is your best option.
if you cant get it welded.
bring the sled into a warm garage
drain the coolant completely.
spray the damaged area with brake cleaner.
use a wire brush or a wire wheel on a drill to clean the damaged area of the heatexchanger. Spray again with brake cleaner and wipe clean.
Apply jb quick weld. dries in like 15 mins but let it sit over night to dry completely. apply a 2nd layer in the morning. wait a few hours and fill your coolant and test for leaks.
you should be good to go.
I used this method to fix mine 4 years ago.
Its still holding strong!!
 
I did this -JB Weld- to my 98xtc in99 and never leaked again and still looks like the dat we did it
 
I have replaced the front heat exchanger when my studded track blew out. It is a sizable project and I would try the welding option first. Good luck

what has to be removed to get the exchanger out...do I have to pull the motor, etc....looking at the parts diagram its had to see how many rivets are involved....Thanks again to all
 
You do not need to remove the engine. The jack shaft, drive shaft, chain case and about 30 rivets. The upper bolt on the heat exchanger mounts to the engine and is about 16" long. I would guess about about 8-10hrs of work if you are mechanically inclined, if not don't try it. I was changing the exhaust, rear skid and track at the same time. It went back together easier and better than I thought it would.
 
I'd be curious if shops go by the service manual (and the flat hourly rate that is associated) which probably says the engine has to be pulled to swap the front exchanger. Some dealers do that, some may do the shortcut and do it the quicker way (as described above) and only charge you the 8-10 hours. Even at that..8-10 hours with avg labor rate of $80/hr....still looking at $7-800 in labor.

As others said..might be worthwhile to see if you can remove the suspension, drive axle and track and have a reputable welder check it out....or go the JB Weld method, if the damage is not too bad and you are confident in doing the repair.
