We have 2 of these. A couple times doing some trail riding not too hard or fast. The wife came to a hill maybe 45 degree X 100' long and couldn make it up. The motor would sputter like it does in reverse (limiter). Was warm as the fan was running but the bike shouldn't be that hot. The same thig happened to both of us today. Temp was about 70F, not riding fast, get to a hill and I could hear her bike sputtering while she was going up. When I went up I almost didn't make it.
The oil level is good on both, 10W30. Is there some kind of "safety" for running hot or low oil that will cause this? The temp lights did not come on when this happened. Will the oil level show low while climbing a hill and start kicking out?

how hot is the fuel tank? i know some of the 660's had a fuel boiling problem and would behave similar to what you are describing.

Do you ride there often? It might be a jetting issue.

Too funny,
I'll contact Yamaha and see what jetting I need to go from 1,200' to 1,400'.

I'll also see how hot the fuel is next time it happens.
Thanks

With just one doing that I would suspect that the reverse override is sticking but with both quads doing it I don't think that is possible. The only thing that comes to mind is bad gas if both are affected.

I think the fuel is OK.
This only happened while climbing a moderate incline. Once over the top they ran fine all day.

So she sputters when you ask for power?? Pull the air box lid and see if that helps... if it does then its too fat, if its worse then its too lean and needs more fuel.
