Hi guys have a 2009 Fuzzer w/ a 07 engine swapped in (dropped a valve last year). New engine allegedly has around 2500 miles on it. Has 09 ECU in it. Starts fine until about -10C (14F). Brand new Yuasa battery last year. Fresh gas. Will turn over until the cows come home but will not start. Even hooked a battery charger on after cranking for a bit to make sure it wasn’t a battery related issue. After letting it warm up inside for around an hour fires right up. This has happened several times now. Any ideas?

Thanks

PS - Can hear fuel pump and turned key off/on a few times before cranking

Was the `07 engine updated with the new decompression spring? That was part of a cold start update for '07 along with an updated ECU. If you still have your '09 engine, you could take them out and put them in your '07 engine.

The bulletin is attached.

I have never had an issue cold starting, but my phazers sit inside. Curious what is the issue is, ECU not allowing fuel? If unit is out of warranty, I assume the ECU is expensive. What are some other fixes? Just a small squirt of starting fluid?

The original '07 ECU used to not let the engine fire until it had built up oil pressure but that was corrected with the update. His '09 ECU has this update. I think it's a problem with a mismatch between the decomp springs and ECU. I have heard of guys getting the update and going back to the old ECU but not the other way around (old springs and new ECU).

As far as I know it still has original decomp springs. Reading a few threads about when the cold start update was released for the 07s it sounded like a lot of people were resolving their issue with just the ECU swap.

That is interesting, may seem why the phazers seem to need some cranking to get them first started, if they won't spark until they have oil pressure.

That was only for '07, which they changed with the update and subsequent years.

So just for an update the issue may have been resolved just by simply adding some isopropyl to the tank. Have cold started it 3 times successfully now. -25C (-13F)

If issues return I’ll try changing spark plugs and swapping decomp springs from the 09. Thanks guys
