Just at my local dealer looking at the the mtx se 162" sled. I told him i was thinking about putting a differnet skid in this sled when i ride trails up north 50-60% of the time. He told me i was nuts! He said that you can drive this 163" sled on the trial 100% of the time (add rail and tric scratchers) without damage and i would keep up to everyone. I am a little worried about the heat delaminating the track and bad hyfax wear. Also i do not think i have seen a mountain sled that can handle ditch banging. I believe this thing will drive like a bus on the winding trails, I will never be able to keep up. I think we maybe have a bit different riding styles????????

What do you think????

I now this is a newer skid but anyone have alot of trail experience on a 162" mtx se??

I have a 08 and use it a lot on the trial. I put on a set of rail scratchers and don't have a problem.
Last year we had about an inch of rain one day and in the nite, the temp went to -10 C. We rode 300 kms on the trails the next day with no problem. I stayed in the back to pick up as much snow as possible.
I put 2200 kms on my first set of slides and only changed them at the end of the season for maintenance. The only wear was at the arch of the rail. I installed a marginal wheel kit and have no issues this year.

However the sled is not a ditch banger.IMO I Find my suspension way too soft for any kind of playing around. That being said the 10 skid and sled in general is a lot different then the 08. May be OK.

All in all as a 50/50 trail and backcountry sled I am very satisfied.

Oh ya I have the 153

i have an 09 that i put the 162" from the 2010 SE on it with an OFT Rail extension kit.

I have only put on about 60 miles in the ditch/trail with the 162 and about 200 with the 153 before that, a couple weeks back and I was highly impressed. I wasn't able to tell in a negative way that the track was there. Once you get used to it, you can throw it around pretty good as well, obviously not like a 121, but if you're an aggressive rider, you'll be fine.

What I was most impressed with in the ditch was the ability to get lift and absorb the bumps. I'm running the stock skid and with the upgrade on the '10 SE, you should be more than happy with it.

Plus, when you come up to some fresh off-trail situations and all your buddies are sitting on the trail with their short tracks watching you play, you'll be all smiles.

imo, a sled any longer than 136 will NOT handle, ride, and bang trails as well as a 136 or less.

people will say otherwise; how they don't notice a diff between track lengths..so maybe it is just personal pref.

but i guarantee you will not rail a 150 inch + mountain sled through the trails like you can a 'trail' sled.

the narrow front end hurts you too for trail banging.

then again, i'm quite aggressive on the trails, so maybe for the slower paced folks the differences isn't as noticable in track length.

That was my point to the dealer. Thats why i said we must drive different. I have my apex wfo out of every corner and with the upgrades you better hold on tight!!! I think this sled will get me there but it will not be the same. I am fine with that as long as it is not burning hyfax like crazy or ruining a new track. As far as ditch banging i think that the 2010 may have an advantage over the 08/09 as the shocks can just pump up.

I have a 10 MTX 162 for good deep snow around here, DITCH banging, and out west. For the aggressive trail or lake day, I ride my 01 SRX. The MTX wont go like the trail sled OBVIOUSLY. I dont care who you are. I mean itll work and you can do it, I do alot of the time, but dont plan on being the leader for a group of trail sleds... I have spent the last 6 years on mountain sleds and finally (two years ago) got the srx. Way better idea. Good luck.

I agree, the 162 isn't going to be the same as a 136 on the trail. However, it's a different riding style/experience. If the goal is to be able to rail through the corners and coming out WOT, then the 162 isn't it. If you learn to understand how the 162 handles, can you enjoy it on the trails and keep up except for the long straights? Sure.

The other question is, what is the goal of the sled the other 50% of the time? If it's deep powder, than the 162 will far out perform a 136 in that regard.

i would get the 153 if it were me if you were going to get the mtx. the floats are amazing. I have an 08 with the mtn tamer. does corner like shorty though.

I would get the xtx then i think you would be very well off.
