Looking for some help. I have had several first generation Apex sleds and always went down one tooth on top gear and changed primary spring for better performance. 2011 Has 24-37 with a 70l chain. I wanted to go to a 23 top do I need to go down to a 68l chain? Has anyone made this change and what primary spring have you used. I ride in Northern Maine mostly big wide trails.

I can't help you with the spring, but my Apex XTX came stock with 23/37 gearing and a 68 L chain. A 70 L chain will work, but you have to crank the adjuster in a lot more to soak up the slack. That extra wrap and stress on the adjuster wheel would worry me, but that's just me. A 68 L chain would be best IMO.

IF you use a 39 tooth you end up with 1,63 gearing.
23/37 is 1,61 and a straigher chain.

I tried the 23T top gear on an 11 Apex 128", I switched to a 68L chain because I felt the chain wrap seemed excessive with 70L, thought it wouldn't be too efficient.
My thoughts on this set up with Ulmer clutching, much better bottom/mid torque/pull, but you cannot hook up, spins like crazy. Now that's on a 128" Ripsaw 2 track, with no studs, groomed trails only. I removed the chain and gear went back to stock. FWIW.
