23/38 @1.65 ratio, 22/36 @ a ratio of 1.64, the same or not?

I recently asked if anyone tried gearing their 22t top gear RTX (07-09) up to a 23 tooth & hadn't got any replies so decided I best take a hit for the team & test it out myself. Before I go & order the gear as well as the required longer 70L chain, does anyone know if raising the gearing by going with a smaller bottom gear the same as increasing the size of the upper gear? If I change the top to a 23 & retain the same 38 bottom I would have a 1.65 ratio. If I keep the stock 22 upper gear & change the bottom to a 36, I would have the same ratio of 1.64. Performance wise would this set up be exactly the same, or is it a entirely different ball game?? The reason I am asking this is because if it is the same I can use my 68L chain & would only have to buy the lower gear. ;)!

Several pros and cons. As you mentioned, weather you have to buy a chain also is one. Top gears are considerably cheaper than bottom gears, especially reverse bottom gears. Bigger diameter gears offer less rolling resistance by not binding the chain as much, so the 23/38 combo would offer an advantage. When I changed the gearing on my Attak, I opted for a larger more expensive 40 tooth bottom gear instead of a cheaper and smaller 22 tooth top gear. Even though the gear cost more, I didn't have to buy a new chain and got the advantage of less chain bind going around a smaller diameter 22 tooth gear.

Now i know i already posted to you that i did gear my 07 rtx up to the 23 top 38 standard bottom, and in fact lost speed on groomed/hard trails, and only gained 1 mph on glare ice.

Sorry, I guess I missed your earlier post but thanks for posting it again!! I think you are the only one who tried gearing one of these up.

Well, all my stock apex's came w/24 top,and i had a 23 top from my attak,so why not try it,the sled ran great on snow all stock,112 gps, until i studded it,than it went down 2 mph,on top speed, but that is still very good, just could not make it run fast on bare ice, compared to all my other apex sleds with mono skid.

I ordered the 24t & chain today. I read that a few riders who geared down from the 24 to the recommended 23 didn't see any top end gains but in fact got less gas mileage! So I opted to give the bigger gear a try, if I don't gain any top end maybe at least it will increase the mileage on the big long lake runs!! lol
Your right, I might as well try & test it myself as it's a split decision on why the 07 RTX is slower than the rest. Half the people say it's slow because of the low gearing, while the other half says it's slow because of the CK skid.
I will post the results of my gearing comparison testing!!
The stock gearing not allowing her legs to stretch all out, or the skid holding e'r back....... we will find out!!!!lol
Thanks again!

Aha, you made a very interesting point, as gearing taller would be best done by going with a bigger upper gear & gearing lower would be better going with a larger bottom gear because like you said, going to smaller gears increase the rolling resistance, where going larger makes for less resistance!!
On that note, I ditched going to a smaller bottom gear to going bigger on the top!!
p.s It didn't hurt as much as I thought either, the gear & chain came to only $123 from royal distributing, probably cheaper than buying just the bottom gear, lol!!!
Thanks shootinstick for waking me brain up!!! :rocks:
