new06apexgt said:I know Yamaha has worked hard to refine/improve the Apex for 2011 and it looks good on paper. Does anyone know if the items below will remain common issues on the Apex and what if any new ones may exist?
- Exhaust Donuts
- Front End Bushings
- Drive Axle Bearings
- Drive Axle Snaps (believe they improved this axle in 2009+)
- Chaincase Failures (Believe they re-designed case in 07+)
- Handwarmers (Initial 2011 results look good based on research here!)
- Darting - Better w/ EPS, new SKI design or same story. (Bergstrom TPs and Shim)
- Hyfax Wear - While other mfgs run on the same conditions w/ no problems.
- Idler Wheel bearings /axle wheel bearings failing often
main issues are...
1)occaisional units with less than optimal handwarmer performance...
2)darting is a function of suspension setup and carbide selection along with tuning and tweaking which is still somewhat needed...dealable..
3)bigger wheel options now exist for better hyfax wear..
4)sled is improved upon and a quality piece...with only stud length concerns to deal with...
get yourself a standard.....with a bit of tuning and tweaking you will love it...I rode Dirkdigglers today and its a 10! way better than the previous gen with all the goodies...
I didnt know they changed the donuts for the better on the 2011,also what did they do to improve the a arm bushings?

SJ - Thanks for getting the thread back on track. It seemed like it got hijacked into a carbide/darting how-to for ahwile there.
I'm very interested in trying to find out what the common issues with the 2011's will be to try and get ahead of them and not get caught out on the trail with failures like I did with my 2006.
In regards to all of the carbide comments I head the bolt pattern is indeed the same but because of the ski design won't be able to install 8" Bergstrom Tripple Points...max would be 6" based on what I have read.

weve had great success with the stud boy duece bar... a no compromise dual runner...with a lot less push and more bite than brand "W"...Id venture to bet this will work well on this sled...
not sure..but I could see the most extreme rider wanting a larger swaybar and a more agressive ski...fyi dirk will run the c&a razors on his with the duece bar...
personally Id like the c&a xtx's or the simmons...but thos who know me know Im partial to simmons ; )

Don't know about the actual bushing....assume it is the same, but I do know that the bulkhead bushings now have a grease zerk. This should make a big difference . Actually didn't the add that in 2010???

I'm with sj on the studboy dual runners. They don't push as much as Woodys. Have used them for a few years now and they aren't bad for moderate trail riding...

Donuts, Don't know. Only 1150 km on mine so far. My 06 Apex has 6,000 plus miles and they are just starting to go.
Bushings have Zerks now.
Drive Axle bearings; Don't know' 90,000 KM on various Yammie's and never had an issue. I grease the jack shaft bearing every two years and drive shaft bearing yearly .
Chaincase redesigned as you said. No issues for years.
Hand warmers pretty good. OK at -20 C. Still 2 bars to go. The key is to wear light gloves to let the heat through to your hands.
Sled is warm. The time in the wind tunnel was well spent.
Darting, I would say not really. Twitchy yes with stock runners. Deuce bars, no shim, very good. Snow Trackers last weekend. Awesome !!!!!! Switched with a buddy with an 800 XP. His sled felt like a Darty Tank compared to my SE. He was amazed, as was I.
HI Fax wear. No issues. Track run at spec. Have adjusted it twice in 550 miles.
That said. I have 10,000 + KM on my 2006 Apex GT hifax and they are still OK. They wore in faster than the 2011 but stopped at 13 mm.
Bearings will likely not be an issue as you can change em out easily.
I do not like the ice build up around the rear wheels. Probably caused by the new rear exchanger and track adjusters.
Takes a few attempts to start it but getting better with more miles.
New seat height takes a little getting used to.
The Sled is sneaky fast. It takes a 2010 XP by 4-5 lengths in 1,000 feet and another 1.5-2 lengths more than that on my former 06 GT. It does not feel fast but it rocks. [ And that is with a 25/37 gear combo on a 681 lb sled not broken in yet] The motor is making some serious horsepower.
1.325 Megabytes in mine. No stud issues here but she looks some close under ther. Yammie recommends 20 mm shims on the tunnel protectors.
Overall, I'd say 9 out of 10. Took me 500 miles to get there, but I'm there.
I would rather have the GYTR's and Ohlins than the Floats but they are OK. They are not as adjustable. The harder you push them the better they like it.

I have a APex std it darted a fair amount, I put 6" snow stud double down carbides on and it improved a ton, I love them. As for hand warmers I can't believe people are having problems, I was out a few days ago -5 F and I still had my hand warmers just above 50% if I put them on high I literally burn my hands they get so hot.
