Have a friend who is leaning towards a 2011 Apex (never had a Yamaha) and I want to educate him about the models and options so just want to check here before I open my mouth about stuff I'm not familiar with. Here is what I have found:
Apex base model comes with regular shocks on front and 128” track – Monoshock rear suspension with remote adjuster
Apex SE comes with Fox Float 2 shocks on front and 128” track – Monoshock rear suspension with Fox Megafloat shock
Apex XTX comes with regular shocks and 144” track – CK 144 rear suspension with Dual Shock or ProComfort?
He has had back problems in the past and hates bumpy trails so I'm thinking that the XTX would be the best ride? I see in the brochure that the XTX could have ProComfort or Dual Shock, what's that all about? I think that if the base model has the RA adjuster I would tell him to stay away from that based on my experience with them but how are the Fox Floats on the SE? Sorry for all the questions.

How much would you guess he weighs fully geared up? I have been told that the Apex standard is setup actually pretty well that year. Some said they liked it better than the floats and it left them with budget to do custom shock work if they actually needed it.
If he is not into getting the shocks setup for his weight and he is a husky guy like me (240lb) the XTX is very big boy friendly with no extra work. Many of the lighter guys say they ride to stiff from the factory. Not so for us big boys.
Sorry, my XTX experiences is still measured by only 600 miles, but I'm working on it.

I've ridden an XTX she is stiff and I feel that its a heavy sled already, the 144 can be harder to handle in certain situations. That's all the experience I have. I purchased a 128 standard but have not had the chance to ride yet and if I don't like the suspension I will be sending all y shocks to hygear for some awesome work. They did a fantastic job with my old Apex monoshock so doing all three shocks I think would be the cats meow, the bees kne....you get the point. Seems to me like there are less standard apexes for sale used. I see a trend there. It appears that people really like them compared to SE and XTX models. I've been told that an extremely aggressive rider will prefer the Air shocks on the SE but no first hand experience.

He is probably 6' and 200lbs in gear. I always thought that the longer 144 track would bridge the bumps better but I have the 121 mono and it's pretty good so the 128 might be the way to go- just hate the RA adjuster.

well i finally got my apex xtx set pretty close to how i want it but it took the nitro xtx springs with the viper 4 position torsion spring adjuster to get it there. stock springs are made for almost 300lb rider. my little 250lb butt would not even flex the sled and it was beating the beep out of me. ended up with gytr clicker shocks on the front as it was valved wayy to soft. just got the skid shocks refreshed/tuned for this season. put thicker oil in the front skid shock as it was valved soft as well.
the xtx will take the big hits better when set right, the standard probably handles trail chop better. either can be made to ride better and handle.

That's good to hear, I was expecting that thing to ride like a dream compared to my 'tank' and I could barely make it around a corner! LOL But then again you were still hard to keep up with when you were on it so I think my riding skills had something to do with it.

I think the xtx skid is the best all around it was a little stiff at first in the chop but wore in perfect for me.


The SE with the Fox Floats handles the stutters and little bumps better than the base Apex. The base Apex will take the big bumps better then the SE. Revalving the shocks will make it even better.
The XTX will bridge the bumps better making it a smoother ride but I have heard they come from the factory a little stiff.
It takes seat time to get any machine dialed in to a specific rider style and weight.

Skill is just practice. Come on up and get some more in during the season.
whatever he decides on, we will help him get it set to suit him best.
