On a new motor, I would change it right away after it's first ride.
Imo, that is when you are going to have the most wear items and the most crud in your oil and filter.
Second oil/filter change would come between 800-1000 miles then once a year after that. JMO's

not a bad idea but i would just change oil and filter at 600 miles and seasonal thereafter thats my opinion

I changed mine @ 300 miles then at end of 1st season and end of each year thereafter.
check/ adjust chain tension and grease zerks are a must as well.
Check your hyfax wear, 2011 XTX's ate them up.

@500 miles initially, then every couple thousand or seasonal, whichever is less. If you change oil too soon when new, you may not seat rings correctly. The break-in oil is designed to allow rings and cross-hatching to mate up better.

thanks for the help guys!! i only have 90 miles on so far so it may be the end of the season by the time i get 500 on!

You should actually leave it in longer than one ride, unless of coarse that ride is 300+ miles. The break-in oil is actually designed to allow enough friction for the rings to seat themselves properly.

What about 700 miles before first oilchange? Way too far? Considering a trip this weekend, not possible to change oil before next week..

Have had 3 new sleds, Attak, Apex LTX, and Apex XTX. All had 1200+ miles on the breakin oil. The Attak has 8000 miles now with 0 issues. The Apex LTX 6000 miles with no issues, the XTX is in the 5 thousands with no issues.
Not a recommendation, just my experience.

I wouldnt think of the 500 as a max more of a min not that you should go a thousand if you can avoid it but you should not change it before 500 IMO it gives the rings the proper amount of time to mate up with the cylinder walls and will give you the most hp and a longer motor life. after that first oil and filter change you dont need to do the filter again for a few seasons 12000 miles accoring to the manual and that my be too long if it takes you 3-4 years or more to get there. did just fine with my last one changeing oil at the start of each season and filter every 3rd season. worked for me others will disagree but still changed the filter more often then yamaha recomends.
