I had to remove mine when I swapped out the Back Country 1.75 with a Ripsaw II 1.25 on my '18 Apex XTX. Although it can be a pain and workout to pump up the air pressure in the shock, letting the air out of the shock made removal and installation of the suspension easier. Likewise, when dropping the rear of the suspension (i.e. leaving front bolt installed), I also found getting the holes to line up was much easier when the shock had no air pressure.
