Does anyone know what the difference is between 8ER-17688-00-00 secondary buttons (used only in Apex secondary's) and 8AV-17688-10-00 buttons (used in all other secondary's? Besides the fact that they are twice the price. (over $12.00 each for us Canucks)

Sorry I can't give you a Yes or NO answer here. But, if you laid then together on the table and they are the same, I might go with the newer sled's shoes. The reason is: maybe they changed the composition of the newer ones for a specific reason. But, then again, if they are the same size, I would probably go with the cheaper ones because, even the old ones seem to last a long time. ;-)
The buttons in my Fx Nytro were shot so I priced them from Yamaha. Sorry but I was not going to pay $12 each for them. I found an exact replacement in the High Performance Engineering catalog. It is part#357-603 in the catalog on page 104 of the 2010 catalog. The best part is the are $1.00 each. The application they list them for is older Yamahas, but they are identical to the factory pieces. I have installed them and are wearing fine with 600 miles of use. Check out the website. www.hiperf.com

Maybe we should band together and boycott Yamaha by not buying any new sleds until they get their parts prices back down to reasonable. If we banded and publicized this widely, I would bet we could have an effect on them. It would be interesting to see which company picked up on this and was the first to respond. We do have a lot of users on this site.
Just food for thought.
BTW, good research. Thanks for the info!

Over the years, I've tried the 'dollar store' buttons and they're not acceptable. The fit is lousy, they wear faster, and they're more prone to break off.
Benny, your dealer was mistaken. No Fx Nytro calls up 8ER bottons; they call for the 8AV's. Those are $5 and change in Canada, so I would guess they should only be about $3 in the U.S., and that would be perfectly acceptable to me. The only sleds that call for 8ER's are Apex's, and the price is double. They appear the same, and 2 dealers could not explain what was different about them. Then again, neither dealer stocked 8ER's, but they had plenty of 8AV's; so maybe the dealers sub them as well.

A buddy replaced his buttons with aftermarkets last year because he wasn't going to pay Yamaha prices. !/2 way through the season on a long weekend saddlebag trip in the U.P., he noticed a grinding sound and loss of RPM's. We found all 3 buttons gone and his helix running metal on metal on his outer sheave. His weekend got cut short.
Buyer beware on cheap after market buttons.

I know what you are saying about "cheap aftermarket" stuff. I have had more bad results with aftermarket over the years than good results. I was skeptical about how long they would last since our riding group goes on 3-4 day saddle bag trips. I put them in more or less to test them around home to see how durable they would be. 650 miles, wearing just fine. Since I am the only one in the group with a Yammi, failure of anykind, no mater how small, is the last thing I want to happen. I wouldn't post some piece of #*$&@ part on here to waste anyones time. Winters too short

I just buy the 8fA button and compared them with the 8ER on the dealer and the difference is the angle by about 1-2 degree.
So i will give it a try at half the price, the angle should wear with the helix after 100 miles and be same angle as the 8ER.

yamaha buttons are expensive, but worth it, last a long time. rather pay more for a better product, that will last.

They're not just expensive north of the border - I just got a price (list) of $15.14 ea for the 8ER-17688-00-00's

I've seen others say that the cheap $1.00(aftermarket) replacements don't last and that may be so but there is no way these darn things should cost almost $50!! This is a normal wear item like spark plugs, hyfax, and carbides. I got about 10K miles out of the Yami originals but that still doesn't make them worth $15/ea. It is just a small piece of plastic.
TOTALLY RIDICULOUS

(I would probably be OK with <$5/ea)

Back in the 90's when I was riding a vmax, the buttons for that were very expensive too. But the problem was that they would break off, probably due to the exact same situation that everyone is dealing with now. A little bit of an angle difference and the pressure was being held by the post instead of the back of the button sitting flush against metal. Causing them to break off.
Our fix then was to use the cheap ones and cut a beer can up for shims with a dollop of silicone behind the buttons. Never had a problem.
But that was back when $45 for buttons was a lot of money.

I can easily get over 10.000kms/6000miles on a set, I think its not worth the $$$ to chance it on dollar store bargins and like an earlier post mentioned is fall short on a trip cuz of a few bucks
I'm not saying that YAM deserves the big $$$ for parts, but if they're reliable and I can count on them its worth the extra...to a CERTAIN point!!! I do agree that something has to be done for us crazy CANUCK'S paying 50% to double the price for parts...I'm starting to order from Port Yamaha delivered right to my DOOR!

I noticed the opposite.
The original buttons wore through real fast, the "cheap" aftermarket buttons that I installed in 2004 are still there and have plenty of wear left.
