- 2006 Apex RTX
I might have the softest Apex seat out there - my sled is a 2006 RTX with an ER seat. It's super comfortable when you first sit on it, but after the foam condenses I start to get some knee strain.
What I'd like to do is firm it up to the level that the RTX and Mountain seats are but not really add much height to it. Those of you that have done this mod, how do you go about it when you're not looking to increase the height? Do you cut out some foam then add new stuff on top? If I take to a shop is there a specific type of foam I should ask for?
I'd like to avoid buying a firmer seat if I can fix mine up.

I added a little to the top of mine to give it a little height, but I also cut some out of the bottom and replaced that with some firm foam. I like it now...

I put 2" of foam under the front of the seat at the base. That way I dont have to reshape the top. It plumps up the seat slightly but isnt obviuos unless your looking for it. I used about a 12" x 19" x2" foam and center it inbetween the front. If you make it too wide you wont be able to get cover stretched back on.

What density did you use FST?

I work at a foam company and the density does play a big role in the firmness but the ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) is what really counts and that can vary with different types of foam. You can get a really light density foam that feels like a brick or a very dense foam that is soft (like memory foam). If you can it's best to bring in a sample that you think is too soft and compare grades to find one that feels right. We have a retail outlet in Kitchener (Custom Foam) but there aren't many other retailers around. It's probably better to find an upholstery comapny that has experience with sled seats.

I use a high quaility "firm" furniture foam. It never takes a set. I mod the seat foam on just about everything I own. Its like adding 2 more inches of suspension travel.
