I have a 03 RX1 with around 7000 miles on it and has alot of black soot in pipe outlets ( running rich ) , was there a jetting update or something that was improved on? a buddy has the same sled and only has 1000 miles on it and his pipes have a nice brown inside pipe not black. Both machines are completly stock, his seems to have alot better throttle response. Any suggestions would be great.

are you running 87 octane? is the choke sticking on? has he done some clutching/mods?

odds are he has a clutch kit or some tuning on his. try synching your carbs. usually helps with most of what you are saiyng is wrong.

my 03 is doing the same thing. It has 11,800 miles on it and I just thought that it was normal with that amount of miles on it, but maybe not.

My 03 has done this since new. My buddy won't even pull up close to me cause it stains the hood.

Everybody knows rings are bad in these sleds . What the soot is is oil burning . You probley noticed you go through more oil than your buddy also . My sled with about 11500 miles on it don't do it but the woman's does with 6000 miles . I found this out by standing behind it with my yamaha jacket and now it speckled with black spots (better come out in wash or I'm not going to be happy ) . What I'm trying to say is its normal if you want to change it you have to put the up dated rings . Hope this helps p.s. don't forget to check oil .

my 04 warrior does this too.... what year did they put the updated rings? also is there something we can run all the time besides ring free which requires you to change your oil asap...

I think I read on here they got the problem fixed in 05 . I don't remember what the fix was besides newer rings but that ring free sounds familar but not sure. The only reason it bothered me is because it got all over my jacket. I just keep checking and adding oil when nessurary (I check it after long rides or after 200 miles) hope this helps

The 03 with no soot, was bought for a guys wife new, but she didnt like it, ( too heavy) so I dont think it has any mods, I burn 1 liter of oil every 1000 kms or 600 miles with 5\30 quakersate, but it was a liter every 500 kms with yamaha synthetic, I am going to add a little Lucas and see if that helps ( not to much ) the neighbor uses it in his ( 26,000 kms and doesnt burn much ) thanks for the comments. even with the soot I love the sled, I was just concerned the soot was something not right but hearing others are experiencing the same thing puts my mind to ease a little.

It doesn't come out very easy! Wife was not to happy about the little blk spots!
