Another clutching question

03 rx1 mountain. Running 10 to 15 lbs boost, factory gearing,belt, springs and helix for 05 mountain rx1. rpms will vary between 10200 and 11000 depending on boost. Sled has 162 camo and lots of light stuff. I am VERY pleased with performance ; other than the clutches are smoking hot and belts blow every 5 tanks of fuel. Also have hauck wts in front. Yes I have checked c to c and offset AND the clutches appear parallel. I did search ,but found stuff from back in 03 that seams a little dated now. Thanks for any help.
 
Most likely if your secondary clutch is smoking hot you have belt slippage. You will probably need to wind the spring on your secodary tighter then add a little weight to your weights. What is your secondary set at now.
 
There's a huge difference in hp from 10 to 15#'s. You need to select the boost level you intend to run at and then clutch accordingly. You want to be around 10300 rpm at wot.
 
Present set up is in hole # 6 on secondary. I agree about the horsepower differance ,however : I just blew 2 belts today, one used and one brand new. Boost never went above 10 lbs and rpm never exceded 10500. I rarely run it at anything more than 10 and mostly around 7lbs. I was in dificult snow but, when I changed the belt I could not hold it in my hand ,let alone touch the clutches! Something must be drastically wrong that I am missing. Please help, I cant afford $100 per ride on top of race fuel and the usual stuff.
 
You are getting alot of belt slippage if your belt and clutches are that hot. Try putting the sping in the 6 hole on your helix and the 3 hole on the clutch. See if that will help. You might need to add weight to the tips of your weights then if it works.
 
You definitely are experiencing belt slippage. Here are a few pointers that may help. Not knowing your experience level, I don't know what you know so please don't feel offended. You should "break in" a new belt. If you can get about 50 miles on it before you really start working it it will increase belt life. When adjusting your spring tension on your secondary there are numbers on both shieves. Depending on the positions you select you determine the amount of preload on the spring (position 1 & 6 is a 70 degree preload, 3 & 6 is a 90 degree preload). I'm not sure what your original position was but I'm betting it was 1 & 6 and you probably didn't have the proper wind on the helix. If you are confident that you had the proper setting then I would agree with Bossman and try 3 & 6 and make sure you twist the helix to the proper ramp, 90-deg. This will more than likely increase your RPM and you will have to either add weight to your primary or decrease the spring tension on the top. There are different ways to skin a cat when it comes to clutching. Just remember that the greater the number combination the more rpm it will take for the secondary to shift up and the more side load it will put on the belt. This will also increase your back shifting. Make sure your shieves are not oily or greasey (sometimes to much grease is put on the jack shaft and it can fly out and get on your shieve faces). Another trick you can do to help belt slippage is to take some scotch brite and roughen the surface of your clutches. You do this by pulling from the center of the shieve out to the outer edge running perpendicular to belt travel. Wipe the dust residue off with a clean rag before installing the new belt. When you install the new belt be sure to install it so you can read the numbers from left to right after installation.
 
Thanks for your replies, Im reasonably experienced with polaris,this is my first Yamaha, and Im never beyond advice. It looks like I may be getting oil contamination from my breather at higher speeds, just not enough to be obvious. I am going to relocate it and see if this cures the heat/slippage issue. If not I will start at the beginning again .
