My 08 Vector is the metal spin on type, I use Hi-Flo filters, much better and cheaper than the Yamaha ones.

I also use Mobil-1 0W-40 European formula, a lot cheaper than Yamalube 0W-40 and probably a lot better as well.

Thanks Irv who do you get your filters from?

don't know about space on the nytro but it's limited on my vector. i'm using the walmart ST6607 filter and mobil one 0-40 synthetic mentioned here. i would much rather use the purolator pure one but there's not enough room. pretty sure the ST6607 is manufactured by champion. i "think" it's a superior to the hi-flo but that's just opinion.

The walmart In Canada only carries fram and Quakerstate filters as far as the oil is the Mobil 1 oil carry any friction modifiers i thought I read here that regular automotive oils wouldnt have the additives required?

i could write a great deal about oil from working in a refinery and racing but still don't claim to be an expert. lubrication is a science in itself. that said the majority of "issues" surrounding oil and how it's changed over the years probably stems from the reduced levels of ZDDP which is an extreme pressure additive. it has been reduced in the majority of oils due to it's negative impact on catalytic converters. however the 0-40 mobil one has a higher level (200 PPM more) than 0-30 which is the reason i'd run the 0-40 over the 0-30. personally i feel the level of ZDDP in the 0-40 is perfectly acceptable. imho people often get hung up on what i call "boutique" oils (redline, royal purple etc.) which i think are a major waste of money. there is NO oil that doesn't get dirty. use a quality oil / filter and change them at regular intervals. having done that i don't feel any failure could be attributable to the oil / filter. if you really want to learn about lubricants there's more info than you'll find anywhere else here : bob is the oil guy

Bob is the oil guy is a forum with what seems to be a lot of useful information but you must keep in mind it is a forum and anyone can post on there and anyone can appear to know what they are talking about. I would ask for credentials before believing anything from some of those guys. Are they educated or just spend time surfing the web and then try to appear to be educated? I would be more inclined to believe someone who could admit that they had a bachelor of science on automotive and mechanical engineering, maybe someone who is a certified lubrication specialist or a member of the society of automotive engineers but very few of the guys that are on that forum are reliable.
Also, We do not allow links to other website that are non paying sponsors.

conflict of interest?

i never spent any real amount of time on BITOG so i can't say with authority that all information there is good. afaik there is no real salesmanship there only discussions about lubrication and overall probably the greatest single collection of lubrication information on the net. just as with this site you need to sift through the information and decide the accuracy of it. the information i posted on the ZDDP content is directly from mobil's website.

people are free to purchase the lubrication products of their own choosing.

i have no BS in anything but my credentials are as follows.

my father taught automotive mechanics for 25 years, i've been pulling wrenches for over 35 including machine work, building competition engines both naturally aspirated and turbocharged for myself as well as others some of which have carried me to a national championship and top ten finishes. i have 15 years in oil refinerys including working in the lube services center which taught me a great deal about marketing and what's actually in the bottle. i am no lubrication expert but feel safe to say with my experience and knowledge have an above average understanding of the lubrication requirements of machinery.

i apologize for the link i was not aware it would be an issue. it was not promotional merely pointing out a common resource of information where some of the participants do have credentials and are not selling anything.

I agree, it isn't advertising anything, just showing a site where people can gather some oil information and draw their own conclusions.

I do believe you have to be careful with what you read, (like any forum) but draw your own conclusions after trying to sort through the B.S.
I do like the UOA sections(used oil analysis) those do not lie and is waht I use as a base of what to run and what not to run.

Hoss, I get mine at a local motorcycle shop close to my home town.
They are exclusively what he carries.

A friend on here, Monte recently gave me a "check sheet" which I believe is directly from Yamaha and in it, under fluids/mtce, they mention the Hi-Flo filter.

Not stating for a fact but if I were a betting man, I would bet Hi-Flo makes the Yamaha filters?

I know Hi-Flo does make filters for other manu's so I see no reason for them not to be making Yamaha filters as well, especially when they are listed right on a Yamaha maintenance check sheet.

Thanks irv and everyone else I did not want to start a 'pissing match" I was just interested to see what other products others have used I was really curious about the full synthetic oil Yamaha Introduced last season I apologize for the language and appreciate your opinions thanks Darin

I use a NAPA Gold filter which is slightly longer then the Yami filter. It is $7 instead of $15. Works in my 06 Vector. I like Amzoil 0-30 or 0-40.

Thanks mtkaboater do you have a napa part # for the filter you are using?

I might have that NAPA part #, but not here at work. I took my old filter in and they matched it up for me. I think the same filter is used in some Yami street bikes. I'll try to remember to check for the number when I get home tonight.
