Has anyone tried to mod the stock air box? Maybe enlarge the snorkle somehow? Ive jetted richer and Im running really dark plugs now. Wondering if theres an easy way to get more air as well. I know the motor seems to rev nicer with the air box lid off, but thats not feasible for riding.
Currently have 20 pilots, 140 mains, FLO COMMANDERs, and Bender race silencer. Id go with K&N's but i cant spend any more $ this year.

Thanks guys, heres some updates. I got a good ride in tonight. I played with my FLO COMMANDERS and repeatedly checked my plugs. I ended up opening the pilot system completely, allowing a leaner mix. Now my plugs are only moderately dark when im tooling around at low RPM's. I'm pretty sure the 20 pilots would be far too rich for a sled without a FLO COMMANDER to lean it a bit. (By the way, the only reason I went to 20's was because the 17.5's were plugging too easily).
Here's the real twist! Running higher RPM's had the opposite effect. Even with the 140 mains, the plugs were dam near white when i shut down the motor after WOT. A few dials to close up the FLO COMMANDER main circuit cured this. Now my plugs are light tan after a good WOT run.
I gotta say, this sled is pulling like a MONSTER. I think the combination of the free flow pipe, larger jets and FLO COMMANDERS really cleaned 'er up. All my cylinders are running dead even with no sputters anywhere, ever.
BLACK JOHN, can you tell me more about the green springs? What will they do exactly? And have u ever checked your plugs after WOT? Just wondering why yours wouldn't be ghost white as well.
KAWMAN, are you sure BENDER has that air box mod done? Ive called them like 3 times this year and they keep saying the project is delayed. I'd still like to do something with my airbox.

I modified my air box recently, I cut the bottom of the air box to about 3x8" then there are 4 holes in the internal baffle, I connected the 2 lower holes and the 2 upper holes leaving the support across the middle, and use the stock foam as my filter and belive me you need it.
If you seen how much dirt I wash out of the filter you would be surprised.
I run 170 mains and silver springs.
So far I love it, sounds cool and runs great.

If interested dom I'll sell you a set of green springs for $20.00. You would pay $35 for new plus shipping. I now have the silver springs to go with Freddies K&N kit.

THANKS A LOT!! I already bought a set though, I just havent installed them yet!
TPI valves from Thunder Products work great. They allow you to adjust the amout of air for varying conditions or performance. www.thunderproducts.com.

Drifter, have you used the TPI valves? how many? what size mains? and new spring or not?
Any info would be great.

Freddie at ECP tried every way to modify and could not get consistent results and put on back burner. Check his post results.

rx-1 blue reverse, I ran them in a Viper and gained just under 1mph in 1000' runs on shaved ice, with 144 studs. At approx 20 degrees F, the plug color changed about the same as giong down 1 jet size. I just bought a new Vector, and I have not had a chance to run the sled yet. The recommendation is 1 per 200cc, I put 4 on the Vector. I have a friend that has an RX-1, and swears by them for his 4 stroke. Noticable difference in warmer weather. What is nice is they come with filters that you can remove, plus you can close them and have a stock airbox when the temps fall out of sight.
