Anybody else having problems with hyfax wear and the 05 skid

I'm going through 1 set of hyfax every trip and I can't figure out what is causing it. I put on a set of ice scratchers and still burned through a pair. The only place I differ from stock is with the Hartman 162" long track kit and the 162X15X2.5" track. I have 1.5" of sag in the track with extrovert drivers. I ride in Cooke City mostly and have to ride at least 18 miles of trail to and from the parking lot but I've never had anywhere near these problems with hyfax. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Just turned 1000 miles this weekend with minimal hyfax wear. Still looks too good to bother with. I don't treat them that well either, with extended riding in minimal snow conditions. I do make sure to hit the banks occasionally to lube them up. I keep my track just tight enough to avoid ratcheting. I'll change them after it gets put away in the spring.
 
Hartman 159 extensions on mine. Only lasted 600k but the last ride did it, high speeds on ice. other than that has been OK, I don't have scratchers but I have about 1-1/2" slack with extroverts. I usually run the edges of the trails and try and keep in snow whenever possible.
 
i have 1900 on the original hyfax. i do about 10 miles of trail riding for every 70 miles of powder riding. maybe thats why they have lasted so long
 
I made 2,400 with my first pair of hyfax. I run snow deflectors on my ski's and left the front skid wheels on. If you are wearing out in front of your scratchers, Run them down all the time, even if you do not think you need them it will help or switch to ski scratchers and put your wheels back on.

Mount scratchers on skid as far forward as possible, there is a post with photos on how to mount scratchers with your limiter strap bolts.
 
I do have them mounted forward of the front set of idlers but my greatest amount of wear is coming from right where the rails curve up in the back.

Are your hyfax wearing completely through? I don't have an '05 but, on my '03 RX-1 the hyfax wore down to within about 1/8" of the wear line after about 70 miles in Cooke. I replaced my first set after one trip to Cooke in Dec. of '02. The second set did the same thing as the first. It seems they wear quickest right where the rear scissor arm attaches to the the rails which would be just about where your rails tip up. This time I left them on. I now have over 2000 miles on that last 1/8" of hyfax with probably about 1/16" of additional wear. The hyfax seem to hold up fairly well after you hit the last 1/8" of hyfax. I am running the stock track at Yamaha specs.

Yes, I've already wore through a set of slide rails so that was an expensive lesson. I think I'll just keep puting on stock hyfax to finish out the year and go with Hyperfax next year unless anyone has any better ideas.

Has anyone tried graphite hyfax on these Vectors yet? I used to use them all the time on my SX and liked them, but I haven't tried them yet on my Vector. I will when it's time.

Also, I've heard that the older style narrower hyfax still fits the RS skid. Maybe by having the hyfax narrower than the track windows like it used to be would allow more snow in to lubricate the hyfax (?) As it is now, the wider hyfax covers the track window opening.

Maybe I'm way out of wack, but that's what happens when I get thinking... :?

Hmmm, I have an idea that might help. I went through a set of hyfax in 800 miles in perfect snow conditions. Those were the graphite hyfax that are suppose to last longer, but it didn't help. This time my dealer used the new wider hyfax that were difficult to fit through the standard windows on the track. After 1025 miles, they show no signs of wear at all. About 400 of those miles were in marginal snow conditions.
 
It is VERY important that you temper the hyfax when they are new. You must stop and let them cool and then run for awhile and then cool them with liberal use of snow just before the cool down.

These newer hyfax will last a very long time if you "heat set" them properly. I have 2004 mnt, and they look like brand new with over 1000 miles on them. But I went by the book in heat setting them from new. It seems to temper them. If you over heat them too much the reverse happens and they wear like crazy down to about 3/2 gone then they cool quicker and quicker and then they will last longer. Try this next time out the barn with new fax and see what a difference it makes. Unless you have a bad batch, I bet this will improve it tremendously.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions. I've ran the stock wide hyfax, the narrow hyfax, and the Yamaha high performance hyfax with the same result so far. I think on my next set I'll try the tempering method and take my time going down the trail stopping every so often and kicking excess snow on the rails. Thanks again
 
Still running my original slides on my 03 RX1 MN. Have 4500 kms on them now. Same as BlgsRX-1mtn that mine wore quickly down to the wear indicator but they have hardly worn at all since!
05 Ventures are having a similar problem but they are wearing about half way down the rail. Yamaha is replacing them with graphite slide rails and adding marginal snow wheels.
 
I'm seeing some were on my hyfax right in front of the rear wheels at the bend in the rails. I have been studying the problem and here is what I think, the wheels are behind the bend in the rails which would cause a were point in front of the bend.

I looked at a new sled on the floor with new slides and the wheels weren't touching the track. If I am right, the wheels need to be moved forward of the bend in the rail. I was going to talk to a tech in West Yellowstone this weekend but we got about 30" of new snow so Expo might be out.

Take a look at your slides and see if you can see what I mean.
