So was out for a ride today, did a few good pulls up the lake to see what the new clutching was doing (have not had it out on a lake yet doing speed runs)
I was on the last one and it felt like I blew a belt, but it only lasted for 1 second then it grabbed and I was off again. I thought to myself I better look at it soon so got off the lake and felt something was wrong with the engagement.
Pulled the side panel and the belt was sitting a half in low in the secondary.
Pulled the belt off and then i could tell right away the secondary spring had unwrapped and the small piece that hooks into the helix was still there but no longer connected to the spring.
The belt is now on the way out with a cord coming out so I cut if off, melted it in and had to drive 25 miles back to the truck, the sled drove fine at about 40mph, but take offs were sluggish with little to no spring to help the belt rise in the secondary.
So it had 4500 miles on it and its toast, the dealer was very surprised it broke a new one is only 22 bucks but they cant have it till noon wednesday when i wanted to be gone 7am wednesday morning to ride, what a PITA!
Is this a rare occurrence or is this happening to others? I have an ulmer clutch kit and its a 09 XTX.
Could this failure be due to the ulmer clutch kit not being tuned right? I have not touched it since I installed it, have only hit the limiter once and didn't on the lake today. I put the secondary spring on the 3rd position on the secondary and in the 6th postion on the helix like the instructions said.
Any Ideas?

Haven't broke on this sled yet. Did break one on my old ZR 900 had to ride it about 80 miles back to the truck like that. It happens.

I don't remember what the stock position is off the top of my head, but I followed the ulmer install instructions for the install.
Anyone else put in there nytro xtx kit? I did 3 on the clutch 6 on the helix I believe.
I just want to be sure I have in installed right so i don't break the spring again when we go on our trip.

I just got my kit in and reading the directions it says to put the spring in the #6 hole on the helix.

Even though you had it in the right holes you did twist it right?
I have seen guys put springs in and not twist them putting tension on while boldting the helix down. That will cause binding and the spring can break.

When I put it in postion 6 I had to turn it clockwise I believe a fair bit to line the bolts up, I had a buddy hold the brake so I could man handle it to get the nuts on. I don't think there is any way i could be twisted to the next time the bolts would line up. At least not by a guys mits!
Any tips ? I am gonna reread the instruction when I install the new spring that I picked up today. I am gonna look on you tube for a install video too.
Edit: Ok the sheet that came with my clutch kit has a spot on it where it says this "Spring Wrap: 6-1" The 6-1 part is handwritten on the sheet like most of the other information its like a fill in the blank sheet ulmer ships with the clutch kit.
I printed the directions off the website when I installed the kit, maybe this is my problem?

i dont think ulmer makes the springs - probably oem yamaha just the correct twist and rate. i've never seen a broken secondary spring either - put your stock one back in at the recommended twist and i'm sure you probably wont even notice it.

My secondary spring is stock, with a custom helix from ulmer. I am looking for clarification on the install instructions of the helix to get it to spring wrap "6-1" although I am not sure what that means. I followed the online ulmer instructions first time round and just want to make sure I am doing it right.
i have ulmer clutch kit for XTX. I used the stock spring (white) wrappet to 90 degres. nr 3 in secundary clutch and nr 6 in helix. And i think it was the way to go.

Put your spring in the 6 hole in the helix and 1 hole in the secondary just as your setup sheet states. A spring can break, it's not common, but it's a "wearable" part so to speak.
