I lost an outside rear idler wheel last week, of course everything was closed for the holidays and when I did get ahold of my local yamaha stealer they wanted $90 for the wheel... Thats right $90+tax for a 7inch plastic wheel with an inferior bearing. So I found the same wheel in black from parts unlimited for $20+tax. Much better. I bought one put it on and rode about 165 miles and lost the other stock wheel. I will get a matching black wheel this week but I wanna know if there is something Im doing to cause the wheels to come off?? the track is a little tight (turbo) but not overly tight. Is there something that will cause the bearings to go bad Both wheels came apart at the bearing. The sled has 3200 miles on it...
Or is it just time for new wheels??

did you check them at beginning of season?
i know i need 2 bearings in my marginal snow wheels as they have to be done every year. the rest i checked with the skid out when i put my olin's in and 4th wheel kit.
you where at the milage that all wheel bearings should be toast or damn close. i think it is time to pull the skid and replace all bearings in your case. while it is out check/change spedo bearing as well.
at 3000km on my sxr i had to do this. sucks but once you have the wheels replaced with the ones you can change the bearings in it will only cost you like $20.00 to do the wheel bearings next time.

When you tighten the track you really have to make sure the axle end bolt & nut is really torqued down hard. Been der dun dat & lost rear wheels when I adjusted my track & didn,t re-tighten the axle nut/bolt enuff.

I planned on replacing all the drive bearings and wheel bearings this summer I greased all the ones I could for now. but the back two I couldn't get the seals off so I left them. They had some play and sounded pretty dry so im sure it was probly just time. The wheels im replacing them with are parts unlimited wheels, im not sure if I can replace the bearings in them but the entire wheel with bearing is only $20 so im ok with that. BUT $90 from yamaha for the same wheel is just stupid!!

shanksRX-1...could you post the part number you ordered for the rear wheels?
What year RX do you have? I have the 05 with the MONO and my dealer is cheaper for the rears but not by much. I want a wheel that I can replace the bearing in. The stockers will just do the same thing again and you can't replace the bearing.
By the way...3000 miles plus it a lot for those bearings. I find mine to be junk at about 2000 or so. I have tried every bearing out there and it don't make a difference. Water gets in them and they are toast period. I found a bearing wholesaler and I just replace them all when I do it. Don't have to pull the skid to do them. I'm paying $1.91 a bearing.
Anyone else know if there is a Kimpex wheel or a colored wheel out there for the rear? I really don't want black but I will if I have too.

wheels
Not sure if I'm talking the same wheels or not, but I just lost the bottom 2 toward the rear. They must've broke right off as the bolts were still fastened on. Was going to load sled for a trip and realized 2 were missing. The good thing...took to the local dealer (only to see what I needed to do) and they put 2 new ones on and only charged me for the wheels ($70) and nothing for the labor. They had me back on the road in 15 min with no appt made. Now that's service. Oh, I was around 4400 miles.

The wheels I get are from parts unlimited. They are available in black or blue and the bearings are replacable. Its $20 for the wheel and bearing or $10 for the bearing or $10 for the wheel. My sled is black so the black wheels look great but they are also available in blue. I will call the guy I do business with and see if he can give me the part number. The shop I go through for these is G&L enterprise (315)287-3999

FYI - Yamaha does make an accessory replacement wheel that looks identical to the stock rear wheel, has a replaceable bearing, and retails for $30.95. The accessory wheels are made by PPD out of Canada and are sold through the Yamaha accessory catalogs. If you go off the microfiche for the wheel you get the stock wheel which comes directly from Japan and has the molded in style bearing - these are the wheels that are $90 as there are very few sold and they are sourced directly from Japan. Below is a link to the accessory style wheel on our website.

Yeah after some research I found those and a Kimpex wheel with a replaceable bearing. Thanks guys. It's so damn stupid as to why they put there wheels on with a non replaceable bearing and then try and wack you $90.00 when you go to replace it!
