have a blown out head gasket on a apex never had this motor apart before anyone have any nice tips for doing this.

thank you

1 get a service manual and read it

2 if not confident in abilities bring to a qualified person

there are so many little things you really need the service manual to take you through the steps required such as torque spec, cam timing, resetting cam chain tensioner, ect

OH man that sucks, what were you doing when you blew it? How many miles on your sled? Are you positive you have a blown head gasket??

im very confident in my abilities just never had a apex motor apart and was looking for if anyone had easy tips to make it faster i got the service manual and looked at that and it looks pretty straight forward compared to any other 4 stroke i have worked on.

i can have the motor out in little over a hour now had it out 3 times last week for faulty water pumps :o|

had it all ready to go again and it was taking alot of water pulled the oil plug water in the motor kept plug out put pressure to the system and water is actually spraying out the side of the motor by the oil tank.

it has a boondocker head shim on it and the sled has sat for 2 years. wrecked the sled in the mountains and finally just got back to putting it together.

so overnight a head gasket so i can pull motor tomorrow install new gasket and put the motor back in. test the sled and load it thursday for a our trip to the snowies

The best tip I can give you that is not in the manuel is once you have the cams out, head nuts & washers removed take two pieces on heater hose and lay them where the cams were and put the cam caps back into place. This way you can remove the head, turn it upside down to clean it and not worrry about the valve caps or shims. Before you put the cams back in make sure all the shims are in place as almost every first timer I've seen do this job has had a shim move out of place. The manuel will give you all the rest of the info.

Also wire tie your timing chains up so they dont fall into the engine, at first glance you think you can just let them pile up in there but you cant they will come unhooked from the water pump and oil pumps shaft and you have to pull the block AGAIN to get at it.

Sounds like a marathon night to get that sled ready for your trip!

Good Luck

How difficult is it to remove the head without pulling the motor from the chassis? Do I have to pull the entire exhaust off first or can I just unbolt it from the head? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
