If you gut it like that it is pretty loud. My brother in law did it and had to open it back up and fix it. I would personaly just cut out the middle and ends of both crossover pipes. This frees up some restriction and makes it just a little louder.

I'm assuming Charged RTX's response was in regard to your initial question that sounded like you wanted to completely gut everything out of your muffler. I don't think you want to rip everything out because that would likely be pretty loud. The link to the post I submitted last year with pictures pretty much details what he described as "cut out the middle and ends of the crossover pipes". I only cut out the middle sections of both crossovers and it's really not loud. It has a nice exhaust note and is quite obviously louder than stock but is nowhere near annoying (although that is a matter of opinion). I ride in Upper MI and have had no issues. I also try to not ride like an idiot in residential areas. My recommnedation would be to follow the attached post exactly and see how it sounds. if you want it louder then open it back up and take more out. I think you'll be pleased with the sound, however, and I'd be surprised if you aren't happy with the results.

No when I say crossovers I mean the perforated pipes that connect the inside and outside chambers. My brother in law did just what you did by cutting out the 2 big pipes. It did sound great but after 100 miles it just got anoying and made the drone worse. If you just cut out the perforated pipes it still takes the same basic route as the factory set up. If you cut out the solid pipes it comes in to the middle chamber and straight out the back.

To each his own I guess. I find the stock sound to get pretty tiresome on long rides while touring. I wish it was quieter from the factory so My ears wouldn't ring all night long.

I intend to gut mine tonight this way -- both middle pipe sections and both ends on both cross over tubes (just the ends of those ones).
Anyone else done theirs this way and have any feedback?
I'l try to take soem pics and post them and then get some feedback next winter when i try it out.

If you cut out the solid and perf pipes in the center of the exhaust it will get louder and change the RPM you get the drone at but that RPM is lower so you don't hear it as much. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to keep the stock look and mod the exhaust. I put over 6000 miles on my last exhaust this way and loved every mile. When compared side by side to an Ultra Q and Excel it was quieter but everyone actually seamed to like the gutted version the best as a concensous. This was WOT pull up a steep hill.
As for the process of doing this. I did mine when I was changing the oil so I was able to leave the exhaust all bolted up, cut and weld everything on the machine. The key to the oil change part is I had the battery removed so I could weld on the machine with no worries. I would highly suggest going this route because it makes cutting the baffles out much easier when the can is bolted to something.
I had many comments about how my apex sounded so good compared to other when warming up in parking lots and when stopping else where for food or gas. Anyone that likes a good sounding exhaust liked the way my gutted exhaust sounded (except for my 75 year old grandpa, for him it was too loud haha).
Any questions during the process feel free to hit me up.
Regards,
Kyle

Why would you do this to your exhaust?

Go aftermarket they sound a lot better. Both of my Apex's have full Huack exhaust. They sounds great and run a lot better.

Well LukeSJU and myself did the deed last night. Now my silencer is a local shop getting stainless steel welding. Should be sweet and sound more like a sport bike. I removed the inside part of the 2 main tubes and the outside parts of both of the perforated tubes. A little different than others have done, but made sense to both of us as we were thinking about how the gasses flow/ resonate through the silencer. Should flow a little smoother. I hope it doesn't drone, or at least drones less, but the drone noise is a fact of life on every Apex I've ever seen and doesn't bother me much at all.
Apex 06: I really like the Excell exhaust and I've heard the Hauck one is nice also. The Hauck looks very stock which would be a bonus. But i like the Excell with the added rear cowling and mono pipe out the rear. Looks killer. but I'll have to check out the Hauck too. I just wonder how it would mate with the Excell header and Air box mod? Without a preset map that might be a fuel delivery headache. But maybe not as PC-V has auto tune that might just correct that on it;s own. Anyone have thoughts on this?
I'd go aftermarket now, but the Excell exhaust is like $799 and Hauck $550. Then Airbox mod is a few hundred and PC-V (need all 3 IMHO to do it right) all togehter add up to a lot of coin. I guess the the Excell headers and gutted silencer will have to tide me over for a while until I can scrape together a few more pennies.
Mr. Kay: Why do this? I dunno. I don't want my sled to be obnoxious and I don't think it will be. If it is bad then I'll change it. I've always thought the Apex is the best sounding/ most awesome sounding sled out there. I've also heard gutting the silencer appropriately can really bring out the sport bike sound in the Apex. That is what I'm hoping for anyways -- to make her sound more like an R1. We'll see!
Pics will follow, hopefully tonight.
