Anyone out there with a motec and boost on the stock CR 4cyl with pump fuel? With the advanced control of timing, fuel, and protection of the knock system, I am wondering about boosting an all stock motor. Typically the 11:1 will not even tolerate 5-6lbs very well and a head shim to lower CR to 10:1 makes a 10-11lbs boost apex happy and lives forever. Here is what I am referencing:

"Dyno results at MoTeC showed a 18hp increase on the NA version and a maximum power output of 300hp on pump gas at 12psi using standard compression and a GT28 turbocharger. The turbo calibration was later derated to ensure greater safety on pump gas and consistent power output of 275hp was obtained using the oem compression ratio and premium pump gas."

Just curious if anyone here has run this set up?

Hi Kinger.

I am not running stock CR, I am decompressed 1 point and I have has no issues tuned for running over 16 psi on pump gas without knock control, but I'm confident the Motec capability has all to do with full control of the ignition timing based on boost and temps.
That boasted 18hp increase in power might also come from ability to control / run higher RPM's too and have KNOCK CONTROL so you can tune to run on the ragged edge.

You see what they are running for HP and boost levels on stock CR Skidoo 1200's and that has a combustion chamber that isn't nearly as efficient as the Genesis 5 valve. The Motec is no joke.

I was hoping you would chime in @mbarryracing! 16 lbs is unheard of on pump fuel even decompressed, so that is really reassuring! My M400 also INCLUDES the knock control and boost control and it was calibrated by Martin himself. It appears it would work a lot like the Sidewinders where you can make it retard timing, lower boost, add fuel when it hears knock to save the engine. I found a BRAND NEW 06 apex my mind is spinning to build my dream BRAND NEW apex!

Kinger,

New '06.. sounds like a sweet find. I'd be excited too.
I guess it all depends on how much consistent power you want to try to get out of a stock CR apex on boost, how long you'd be running it in the boost.
With stock CR on a RX1 or Apex past experience I know that you can run alot of boost (14+) for a short blast before it will detonate, like takes 5 seconds. That Knock Control module is a nice addition and allows you to almost be careless, but not sure what the threshold is. If you clutch it for too much boost then when the Motec detects the knock and significantly pulls the power back out to a safe level then it will become a dog rather quick.
Off and on over the last few seasons I have considered spending the $$$ for upgrading to the knock control to my M400 package, but my Apex is so darn good at the power level it's at now for trail riding and toying with SW's that i'm not convinced that I need more than the 310hp. The start of this year I track dyno'd at FPP and gained 19hp to the track over my old clutching with new primary weights & spring and a different custom Team secondary helix, so now it's putting more power to the track and is faster at 14 psi then it was at 16 psi. I'm sure with knock control I could run way more boost but I have also found going higher in power / boost and having to run even more weight to hold it back becomes a trade-off with losing response on the trail due to the accompanying flywheel effect.

I have always set up the sleds to run at any speed in any condition balls to the wall or put around, I have been known to be doing 140+ mph for miles and miles on long lakes, right to the bar. I don't want to mess with the sled once I have it set up. I never adjust anything, never mess with settings. I may adjust the clicker shocks, that's it on a trip. I just want to turn key ride, and smile ear to ear with the stupid power of a apex turbo! I think with stock CR if the knock was kicking in and killing some power I would MAYBE consider carrying a little torco with me and dump in occasionally to keep it out of knock. The turbo was a tiny bit soft in the low rpm and I am excited to keep the snappiness of stock high compression with 10-12 psi of boost. At 275hp if his claims are right the sled would be a absolute beast on the tight trails and nothing but a tail light on the lakes. That my ideal sled! If you looked at my garage I was getting the lightweight stuff that worked as well as getting them balanced, to this day the SW feels like a heavy slug compared to the turbo apex (impulse turbo, secret is fuel behind and under you, also ZX2 suspension). It was so light to drive and I have never giggled while dangling the skis at 100 mph just because it can! So much miss!
