Greetings folks! I have an 03 RX-1 which uses a small amount of oil between oil changes, about 1/2 qt per 1500 miles. Even this amount of oil consumption I find to be unacceptable. My question to you is what oil consumption are you seeing with the Apex model? I can get a good deal from my local dealer on an 08 Apex but don't want another oil burner. I was at the Snodeo in northern NH last weekend and the Yamaha reps said that oil consumption up to 1 qt. per 1000 miles is the Yamaha spec.. I have built many engines for all sorts of applications over the past 30 years and never saw this amount of oil consumption. Thanks!!!

Also, I plan on rebuilding the 03 RX-1 engine with the 05 piston rings to reduce the oil consumption. The collective knowledge on this site says this is the fix for the 03 and 04 models.

Must be the same rep I spoke to who said he had never heard of this site! Yeh, right!!!! What a stooge! 2000 miles on my 06 Apex and no oil consumption at all.

No oil usage in 2700 miles here. The key is to get the rings to seat properly during break in. Run it hard!!!!!!

I have an '08 with 5600kms and no oil usage and I ride with a buddy who has a '05 with no oil usage either...'05 had revised/better oil rings than '03 & '04 :4STroke:

In my 03 RX-1 I had to add about a quart every 1000 miles. I have about 4500 miles on my 07 Attak & have never needed to add any. Checked this season at the 1500 mile mark & still at full mark.

Thanks guys. I'm going to try to settle with my dealer on a good price on the 08 Apex. It is his last sled and I know he really wants to sell it so he'll have no leftovers. I did some checking on the Yamaha parts finder and just as others have said, the part number for the rings were changed in 05 but everything else in this section of the engine has the same parts numbers (pistons, block, etc.) so while I am at the dealer on Monday I'm going to order the parts to rebuild my 03 engine with the updated piston rings. Break in is really important to getting the rings seated, the engine needs to be loaded to get the cylinder pressures up. We get our drag racing V8's "broken in" with brief but progressively harder runs on the dyno.. Every time a new engine is allowed to run unloaded for a long time it results in poor leakdown test results. My 03 RX-1 used no oil for the first 3000 miles but has been getting worse as the miles add up. After the rebuild, this sled will go to my son and dad will ride the 08 Apex.
