Question for you Mtn guys who run the ECP kit or any one else for that matter. Is it a must have (prefilters) for powder riding I don't see a ton of it here in Mi.but loved the fact that with the stock airbox you could bury it in snow and never miss a beat.I hate a sled that coughs a sputters in deep snow.

i was hitting some 3-4 foot drifts on the weekend with the carb heater turned off (coolant valve closed) and it started to freeze up and loose power on the top end (only rev to 9000rpms and the power would drop to nothing)...blew the snow off the k&n's and turned on the coolant valve to thaw the carbs and all was fixed in 10-15 mins of slower riding...i definitely need prefilters ;)!

Guys, I put a post about frozen k&n's on the general forum. Probably should have started here since you guys deal with powder virtually every time you ride. Last Sunday I was in ditches and tree lines with at times well over 2 feet of fresh, light powder, and many times had powder up and over the hood. Also managed to bury the front up to the headlights a couple of times. My filters froze and I lost all of my top end. Got them blown out at one point and top end came back. Plowed in again, and lost top end again.

I'm not at all sure I had the pre-filters fitted perfectly on the underside of the filters and am hoping that correction alone will prevent future freeze ups.

Have you powder guys had any problems with k&n freeze ups with the pre-filters installed?

Which of you guys are running evac vs. the provided crank breather filter?

Do you guys take any other powder precautions with the k&n's like taping over the center hood vents or something else to keep some snow dust and moisture out of the chasis/filters?

I love the ecp kit, just want to do what I can to avoid the filter freeze up again. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I'm just running the provided filter but do not have extended periods of wide open throttle, just a little bit of oil noticed on belt cover.

Pre filters have not iced up yet and last year we rode in some deep powder.

Sounds like you were in some really fine grane snow with cold temps, that could be where the problem would occur.

duct tape over the very front vents probably would help but wouldn't tape allof them.

PW, thanks. My pre-filters stayed plyable - but I think the pores in the filter got plugged with snow or wet and frozen shut. It could have been just that - a unique powder/temp combo I won't see often again. It also could have been a less than perfect fitting of the prefilters - last night I put them on filters prior to reinstalling the filters and the fit on the underside seems much better. It could have been all of the above and the couple deep plow-ins I took put it over the edge. But without much experience with our without the k&n's, I just wanted to see if there is something more I should be doing, at least in powder situations. From the lack of responses, think I just ran into (and probably helped create) a quirk that day.
