T-Bone said:The slide wear issue is laughable to me! Hoe many times does it have to be said that they wear quickly when new, reach a point to where it seems they stop wearing. That has been my experience and has been discussed on this site for years.
Really? That's the issue? If you want long lasting slides, buy a Polaris. If you want lightweight sled, buy a ski-doo. If you want a turbo, buy an arctic cat.
Like most "problems" this is more of a "you" issue than a Yamaha issue. When all things are considered, Yamaha builds what they believe provides the best value for their customer. If they don't produce something "YOU" like, buy from someone else that does.
Really?
You can laugh all you want. My buddy put 400 miles on his 2011 in exceelnt conditions in the UP and he burned through the slides. They needed to be replaced. the idea that they get to this mythical wear point and stay there is crap. We added Excel wheels and he's put 2000 miles on these hyfax and they are like new. Yamaha is the only OEM who uses that small of a wheel and that comes right from the Manufacture who makes all four oem's wheels. So stop with the excuses for Yamaha.

Not an excuse for Yamaha. You and your buddy knew of the hyfax and he still bought the sled. If he didn't do his homework or did his homework and still bought s Yamaha, then that is a "you" problem.

I didn't complain about it you are the one that started talking about hyfax wear and people being wrong. the only person that's wrong is you.
I know there's a problem I simply install the excel wheels and cure the problem

Im the buddy that bought the sled. Please tell me what homework could i have done to know that the hyfax wear out prematurly because yamaha puts a wheel thats to small!!! Should i have gone to the dealer and put a ruler on them to see if there good. LOL Come on lets get real. I paid over $12,000 for the sled i expected to get on and ride it! After all this was the game changer!!! Also the new ski is no better. I have 2,000 mi on it now and i can tell you that the 2011 apex is the same sled as the 2007 model that i also owned. Small improvments have been made but with a huge price tag.

This is deja vu, but it is always nice to dream and hope and then to weep and wait 'til next season (in this case the season after)!
Personally, I don't switch sleds that often so right now I'm content to improve what I have and see how long it will last.

Come on Mad Russian....if you keep telling yourself it is good enough simply becuase it came from Yamaha (like the rest)...it's got to be good enough, no? It is all in your mind your sliders are wearing down to the rails on your brand new 2011 sled. Yamaha makes the best hyfax, best idler wheels, and suspensions in the industry..didnt you know?
Surely you jest about the new M-9 skis not being any better? You mean slapping EPS and some new mediocre skis (to cover up the real issue of the weight) didnt fix the steering issue? Cant be true....I call Bravo Sierra. Put the Blue Goggles on, your sled will steer much better and your hifax will last forever.
I've heard of "bleeding blue"...but come on, you cannot get a objective opinion here. Then again....you are on a Yamaha-based enthusiasts site.
I know what my Yamahas have been good for all these years..and I know what they have not been good for all these years....but I can be honest about it.

Excusing simplistic issues (that could be easily rectified by the manufacturer) by saying it is a "you" problem is quite laughable really. While it certainly is true you WILL take what Yamaha manufactures (if you do buy their product), that most certainly does NOT excuse the flaw.
Who here would buy a truck that would require you to replace a part every season of the year? Hell, I get mad I have to do the brakes once a year.
Simple fix for the hyfax issue gets ignored. Hand warmers went ignored for YEARS. Skis as well. Suspension and front end issues members here have to rectify, as opposed to the manufacturer.
It would be nice if Yamaha would fix the problems they HAVE before they try to sell me on something NEW they added to a sled.
So, yes, no one HAS to buy a Yamaha. That is a "ME" problem. Buy elsewhere. What happens if enough "ME"s do buy elsewhere? YOU end up buying elsewhere because Yamaha gets out of the business due to lack of sales. In such a small segment as snowmobile manufacturers, no one can afford to just say "take it or leave it".

I would agree with most of this statement. I have owned both Apex engines and would say the new Apex has a smoother powerband and less engine breaking. You are right it isn't like it is $4,000 better than the old Apex.
I like my XTX but I keep feeling myself wanting to try the 1200 Renegade GSX model of Ski Doo.
New Ski's for Yamaha with 8" duallies are okay but I am going to go back to the 2010 skis with Snowtrackers for next year. We haven't had open trails to test the set up this year. I have 1500 miles on the XTX and overall I like it but I don't think it is worth the price tag they have on it. I would buy a left over 2011 model for the discounted price. If you want a 2012 wait until January and get a discounted price.
The slide issue is BS. I played snowmobile softball this weekend and I couldn't even use my 2011 Apex XTX because the slides would get stuck and I couldn't move.

YAWN......buy a Cat if you dont like it. They are being business savvy, just because one company is constantly changing their sleds doesn't mean everyone has to, we are spoiled in technology and always want more...jeeze. I think every one of the big 4 has their issues and if you cant relies that then you're not that bright to begin with. If they came out with a totally new design everyone would bitch about them having first year issues and other things, I guess there is no win situation for Yamaha, damned if you do damned if you dont.

How about 6th year problem!!! I dont think we r asking for to much. If we all had your way of thinking yamaha would have already gone out of the snowmobilling industry!!!! Go to other brand if we dont like it! Bravo

We as Yamaha riders have fix these problems (skis, hyfax wear and hand warmers) for a long time. Why cant they change the issues at hand, A little taller wheel, aftermarket ski because the engineers just cant fiquire this one out and yamaha heaters for the same reason. How much could it cost over the mediocre pieces they already put on the sled? So the tech side is fine, it the little things that need attention IMHO. By the way my hand warmers on my last two have been fine for me but not for the masses. Who (yamaha) do they want to make happy? Customers have been fixing these same issues to long...

My biggest beef is the 2012 apex isn't much different then the 2003 RX-1
differences
1. fuel injection
2. EXUP exhaust
3. MONO shock Skid
4. some what rider forward
5. power steering
similarities
1. same front end
2. Same chassis
3. Basically the same motor "some minor changes but still a 998cc 4 cylinder.
4. same weight
5. no storage
6. eat hyfax
7. Require after market skis
8. require clutching improvements
9. require fuel system improvements 'rx-1 needed carb improvements apex needs a fuel controller"
10. Limited to a small stud because of clearance issues
11. 2011 apex performance suffers in deep snow just like my 2003 rx-1 did.
12. the HP numbers aren't much better on the 2011 apex compared to a 2003 RX-1. It's better but it's not earth shattering.
Since the RX-1 has came out cat has added the twin spar, new snow pro, Cross fire R and is adding a new chassis for 2012 plus countless new skids, and motor packages. Doo added the Rev, the XP, the Mach Z chassis, a performance four stroke plus countless new skids, and motor packages. Polaris added Fusion,IQ, the assault, and the Rush.
Yamaha has done little or nothing to it's flagship for almost 10 years now. Is the apex a nice snowmobile yes. But it's not the fastest, that goes to the z1, It's not the lightest that goes to the Etec, It doesn't have the best suspension and chassis that goes to the Rush.
Yamaha used to be the sled to buy if you wanted a sled that would go long miles. Well the other 3 OEM's have closed that gap as well.
