Attak Backfiring???

I just changed my donuts at 5500 kms as preventive measure after reading all these threads, they were pretty decent, but once opened, I replaced anyway. I just came back from a 3000 km trip and after a long 175kmh WOT, my buddy behind me ( I smoked him btw) told me he saw 2 foot flames when I decelerated. I think that could be normal due to unburned fuel. Does yours backfire all the time or on similar situations?

As a footnote, my buddy's 06 with 13000kms on it had his exhaust brake after the Y, then broke at the Y. With NO backfire at all btw.

Thanks Shark. I found rocker Dans post and printed it out. Went on my trip this weekend and by yesterday afternoon the sled sounded horrible. Very loud under the hood and exhaust was coming out all the hood vents. I know there is a major problem under there now. Gonna tear into it tomorrow and see what is all wrecked.

My sled never backfired until this season. So i went 3100 miles before it started happening. Then it just started getting gradually worse. Now I'm up to 4700 miles and I have a real problem backfires and flames on every deceleration but I know I have an obvious leak under the gas tank. The engine roars even at idle. I'm sure I have bad donuts/y pipes or worse

5200 miles on 06 Apex, started to backfire donuts are being replaced as well as 1 or 2 small cracks on pipes just in back of accordians...in the shop & Yamaha warranty covering. How long before some of these parts are on backorder?

Put me on the 5000m, y-pipe cracked list. Exactly as above. Sled got slowly louder at the begining of the season. Of course it was after I had reasembled the machine, track replacement! darn Ripsaw! Driveshaft bearing, and all the shot idler wheels. I pulled her apart again to find left two clamps had rotated around, donuts had puffed out the top. Replaced them. 190 miles later loud again and really cool flames when getting off the throttle. Pulled apart again, 2- nd hole from left, y-pipe flange broke off. Ordered both y-pipes and 4 more donuts. Thinking I should order the clamps as well. Getting rather tired of the cost of this. Getting close to $2000.00 this season. I have converted 5 friends over to Yamaha last year with this sled. They are getting a bit concerned watching how much I have it tore apart this year!
When I ordered the donuts my dealer said he had not sold any before me, and sadly I had not read up on this issue here. I would love to have known to inspect the donuts when I was changing the track. Bummer
I will be asking my dealer if I can get a break with the cost of the exhast parts. Fingers crossed. At least my buddy,s will learn from our pain!!

Yep, I have the exact same thing but mine has been like since new. Only happens after running WOT on the lakes. Exhaust is not louder than day 1.

More good news, Y-pipes are on back order. Est Feb 28 or Mar 4. Donuts are also on back order. No real suprise. Seems alot of the 06 Apex guys are getting to the 5000 plus miles.
IMO, someone at Yamaha should step up on this issue. At least get the Y-pipe and donut inventory up to meet the demand
looking like the Quebec trip is heading down the crapper. I.ll be fixed about the time the snows melting.
This is really getting frustrating.

After how many miles should maybe have a look at the exhaust donuts? I hear a few guys got this covered even though they never had warrenty, is that true? I have 1500 miles on my sled so far, love it, no problems.

I would finish the year off then change them out in the sring / summer. I wouldn't try to squeeze another year out of them. Think about when they will fail. In the summer... no. In the winter when you want to ride. Change them each year or two ( 2,000 / 3,000 miles) depending on how you ride and your mileage.
