I'm around 700kms, so I'm going to do my first oil change, as well as changing and cleaning the chain case. I read a comment on a Biker Mike you tube video that read along the lines of getting the dealer to do the first oil change for warranty purposes. Anyone know if the dealer has to do it for warranty? I'm going there tomorrow anyways so I will ask but in mean time I'm curious .

Welcome to TY!!! My dealer told me that I can do my own maintenance and would not void warranty. I also have a 18 Viper LTX and really like it. Good luck!!!!

Dealer does not have to do it for warranty. You should be prepared to provide proof that the work was done, ie.receipts and maybe a photo of the odometer with the oil and filter in the background.

That said, for the piece of mind I let the dealer do the first one on my Yamaha sleds for two reasons. First, no wiggle room on stuff that I should have caught and they would have. In case of a claim it is up to them or Yamaha to come through, I have no part. Second, some of the filters are seriously difficult to do and if the dealer does the first one I may not have to do the next one for years. Don't know if I will let it go the full 20000km but I'm sure not doing it every year.

Hmm that is a great point. I'm torn now. I have the wheels in motion already, aka, panels off, foot guard off, seat off, bottom panel off. But I didn't buy the oil kit yet, so I guess I'm not overly committed.

Don't fret it, not a life or death deal. My suggestion would change if I didn't have a good dealer. The other manufacturers have good sleds, outboards, generators, and snow blowers too, but I go Yamaha as much as I can in order to build the relationship. Sometimes I may even be paying a little more but I know the guys often go the extra mile for me.

Just go for it and do it yourself, you'll feel better in the end that you know that much more about your sled.
Get the oil change kit that comes with 4 quart's of oil, oil filter, oil tank o-ring, and the brass washer for the oil pan drain bolt, and change that filter with your oil once a season no matter who recommends what, it don't cost that much and you'll have peace of mind.

Tip for the day. Be sure you removed the old rubber o-ring when changing your oil filter prior to installing your new one. I heard it makes a god awful mess if you miss that detail. I don't know why I know this. :hide: Lol
Welcome to TY.

It seems a long interval for oil filter changes but remember a snowmobile shouldn't be exposed to dust and dirt like summer use vehicle would. i have a filter I bought last spring for the end of season change before I realized I was no where close to Yamaha recommendation. Probably just save it till I have 10,000 km or so. Oil changes annually at least.

I hope your not one of those people that buys a new car and never changes the transmission oil cause the manufacturer say's it's a sealed transmission and never needs changing the oil and filter, then your tranny goes out at 82k and your dealer tells you the life expectancy is only 75k, if so I got some magic beans I'll sell you.

engine oil gets changed with chain case oil every season on all 4 strokers. every 2nd season i do the oil filters. always buy the yamaha oil change kits to do them.

Why not do filter seasonly as well? What are you saving? Especially since you're buying the kit, filter comes with each kit.

Not nice LOL ! after the first 500 mile service, the Manual states 12000 miles between filters and about 2500 on oil . If Yamaha puts that in there Service manual then I think on the filter we have some leeway. But it's a good idea to change the oil once a year or 2500 miles which ever comes first . I wish it would snow so we better things to do . And I change my transmission oil on my cars every 25000 and filter every 75K. Oil I go 5000

the filter fits the boat motor too and the year i do not do the sled, the boat needs one.

I believe the same filter fits my 700 grizz and yxz

I’m new to this whole 4 stroke thing coming from Polaris’s my whole life. With that said I’m not new to oil it’s what I sell for a living. Oil is the lifeline of any motor and huge strides have been made in the quality and technology of oil. It’s a relatively small price to pay yearly to get it changed as well as the filter. Think of all the hot and extreme cold cycles it goes through on a snowmobile and then sits in the pan for 6-8 months a year not being used. Also I’m imagining that Yamaha oil for these machines is full synthetic which is the only thing to run in anything from a weed whacked to a truck. I only have a hundred miles I picked mine up at 5 o’clock on the last night we were there which somewhat sucks because I’m going to be forced to have a dealer do it while we are on our next trip. I would rather learn the procedure and gain a better understanding of the mechanics of what I own.
