AVGAS

I know a few people for sure with turbos and nos run avgas and I know there is mention using avgas, but couldn't find that many. Can someone tell me if this is the same as say C10 race fuel or similar? Obviously it should be better than running 91 octane pump gas in which I believe is the highest octane rating we can by here in Canada at the pump. It's just that C10 is a little hard to find around here in the winter and I can probably get as much avgas as I want. Thanks.

AVGAS (100LL) is a 100 Motor octane fuel that works excellent in our sleds. When comparing it to a diffrent fuels octane number, be sure to use the MOTOR octane number.

I run 11psi all day on my Bender stage 2 RX1 (stock compression) using AVGAS and never had any problems. I'm sure I could run more boost and be fine, I just like to keep things ultra safe.

The closer the Motor Octane number to the Research Octane number the more stable the fuel is throughout the RPM range. This is critical when running higher than 7500 RPM engine speeds.

Avgas is meant to be run in engines doing 3000 RPM.. It burns very slowly if I'm not mistaken.. It is not designed for 8000--10000 rpm.. Airplanes also run a very constant rpm for long periods.. Not a good choice of fuels..

av gas

all of my srx,s ran on av gas. the 76 yamaha sent me up date carb jet,s to do this as well as the paper work and my 77 came out of the box with labeld 115/130 av gas only as did the 78 ssr and we ran those moter up there on the tack. even more rpm in super mod trim with the wild pipes. yamaha,s resoning for this was this gas was of the best avlable allway,s tested and allways fresh. and readly avlable at any airport.

My point being that avgas is not the best fuel to use.. ALL fuels have different properties and are designed for different uses..C-10 or VP fuel are far superior for your snowmobile..

If it's cheap and easy for you to get AvGas, I say why not, as long as you understand its chemical composition is different, and that it is not a racing gasoline specifically formulated for a specific engine/racing application.

For maximum performance from a racing engine, racing gasoline will normally provide better performance than Avgas. Avgas can be a good gasoline for some non-aviation applications, but since most racers do not know the exact octane requirement of their engines, they would be better off with a real racing gasoline that was formulated for their specific application and will give them the overall resistance to detonation that they need to protect their investment. For someone that has spent $15,000 to $50,000 or more on their racing engine, it is foolish to cut corners on gasoline, in either case be sure you have a gasoline with adequate octane quality.

Good or not, I ran 100% av gas all last year @ 17lbs of boost with the low comp head shim. I think you could get away with a little more boost with the rear mounts, cause of the cooling pipe under the tunnel.

Good feedback, thanks guys, good info Hammer!!! Sounds like I should stay with the VP C10 that I'm using now, although their bulletin states the C16 is leaded and for use with turbocharged engines, whereas the C10 is unleaded and they don't say anything about turbocharged engines.
I usually mixed 91 Octane pump gas with C10 for my asphalt racing, but C10 is a little harder for me to get in the winter whereas Avgas is readily available to me so I was thinking of using it for when I run high boost in the winter. I was thinking of running it straight at the start of the days ride on high boost, then turning the boost down as I ad pump gas to the mix during the day. Sounds like a few guys are already doing this. I can't see that it would be much different than running the 50/50 mix. I understand that Avgas does have some lead in it (guess to have it stay fresh longer) would this give me trouble in the long run? Maybe my 02 sensor won't like it.

AVGAS works very well with our sleds. Anyone that says it does not work VERY WELL has simply not tried it.
