I turn the key on the ignition and gauge lights up the tachometer needle goes from one end and back. I can hear the fuel pump cycle.
Turn the key all the way to crank the motor and everything goes out.
There's nothing.
Turn the key 6 to 8 more times and something finally catches and starts right up fine.

Electrically there are a few common issues with the apex.
The key switch is not usually one, but antyhing mechanical/electrical can fail so its not out of the question.
I would be leaning more towards a bad ground in your wiring harness. If that does not pan out then i would look at the relay mounted down beside the battery.
Actually i would check the relay at the battery first, because it is quick and easy to access.
This part develops corrosion and is a known problem.
Good luck

Sounds like a bad starter relay
Start with the simple things:
-poor battery cable connection....clean and tighten cables on battery and starter relay
-check, clean, and tighten ground cable at battery and engine attachment
-charge or replace battery
Most problems are usually solved with simple maintenance
