This sucks. The weekend my RX1 is out of service due to waiting on parts for track replacement, I figured that my old sled would be ok. Not so. Got about 20 km and the fixed sheave on the primary blew apart. 3 pieces - one went through the hood, one went through the steel chassis, the other just bounced around a bit. The engine was spinning about 7500 rpm when it blew. Fortunately, my thumb is fast and I was able to let off before it exceeded redline (8500).

At least here's the good part: had plenty of snow and got a good 10 minutes of powder riding out back while it still worked. Felt so good.

WOW! Never heard that one before! Count your blessings that you were'nt hit with one of those missles! What sled was that?

hey LB,
How many miles on your Exciter? I bought an 87 new and ran it for
10 years. I think I had around 4500 miles on it when I sold it.
Not alot of mileage for 10 years. The only problem I had was putting
an aftermarket pipe on it. It ran well as long as it stayed below
30 deg F. Any warmer than that and it wouldn't run at all. Luckily
it wasn't warm very often.

Sorry to hear about your Exciter. I too bought a 87 Exciter new. It always ran the best jet before it seized the motor! It was my first sled to attempt to make into a "Go Fast" sled. I had the head shaved, ported, carb overbored, PSI single originally and I went to PSI twins. What a horrible choice. I'm sure most of the burn downs were my fault. That sled ate primary clutches for lunch. Yamaha replaced the original with a comet (remember?) and when it was eaten too I put what was called a Magnum Gold or "Quick Shift" clutch on it. I ran it another 4,000 miles with that clutch with zero clutch problems. It was kind of like the heavy hitters. You'd add or take off weight in different areas of the clutch weigths to get into the proper RPM range. I always called it my "Fred Flinstone" clutch but man did it ever work. I saved it when my Exciter died the last time and put it on my MXZ. As far as I know it's still going. I don't even know if they still make them. It was a Koronis product. I think he developed the old Scorpion duplo? clutch. Good luck getting things back together. PB

Mileage? Don't know. When I got it, the odometer *said* 4000 km, but that was in 97. My best guess based on its condition was about 20000. It now says 9000, but the speedometer hookup was broken for a while (fixed now), I probably put about 15000 on it... That makes 35000 km. Best guess. Its in *much* better condition now than it was in when I got it.

BTW: Never had a burn down *ever* - toasted it once when the oil pump *fell off*, now its got 1st oversize weisco and I premix. There's something *weird* about the exhaust pipe.... from the outside, it *looks* stock, but it ain't. Its real fast off the line, kills RX1-121, top end equal to SX600.

bad weekend

we have the best snow in years, buddy came all the way out here with his freshly piped vipeer, made it all of 3 miles and th emag cylinder went down. No spark at all, before we left he had to change plugs. So, he limped home, I went ditch banging in 5 feet of fresh fluff, with another buddy on a 1975 enticer 250, I couldnt believe that little thing. I told Stevt to sell the Viper and buy an enticer.

I hate when the fixed sheave explodes. I had it happen twice on my vmax-4. It was a comet 108 junk clutch. First time took out the cat secondary, the second time it took out the end of the engine. It's no fun.
