Bearings and Bushings Replaced after 3700 Miles

RXwonder,those bushings come with those splits in the sides.But it can't hurt to have a new set in there :D
 
Now that's the info I'm looking for as others should benefit also :D

I hear alot of talk about dry bearings , rusted bearings and bearings about to fail but has anyone had one really go south ? I mean like most Polaris drive train bearings that the races just come apart the the bearings fail leaving you stranded on the trail ? I bet these bearings will survive longer than you might think. the bearings in the VMAX 700 with 7000 miles on them were most likely dry and rusty for 4000 miles and didn't fail . Dont get me wrong I think the bearings should be greased every year but I dont think I am going to panic just yet :shock: :) :)
 
I probably would not have checked mine either if I had not had the track out. It probably would have been fine but since I have the oppurtunity, I will swap it. Im glad I caught the bushings though!!
 
Bob you can buy a grease injector needle for +-$2.00 at any napa store. I have also seen them at most farm tractor dealers.

I had the same items wearing out on my two SRXs every season since 98.2500-3500 miles a year.
The funny part is my girlfriend rides a Polaris and I never replace anything.
Its just normal maintence on a Yamaha to replace the drive bearings every year for me. :shock:

So dave do you drill a hole in each cover to get grease into the bearing? thanks pete
 
nope no hole required, just carefully insert the needle into the inner portion of the rubber seal inbetween the inner race and the seal. you will make a very small hole in the seal but it is worth it to get some grease in the bearing and displace the water. You would be amazed how much water will come out of a new bearing when you do this ever after just a few hundred miles.

I just picked up a new rx-1 03 and went to put on new olin shocks, 1.25 track. when I went to take the shocks out I noticed that there was no grease on any of the bushings. I bought some yamaha grease and noticed that the temp. rating was only good up to +50f. I e-mailed Dow Corning to ask what kind of grease to use. I can not find the number he gave me to use. when I find it I will post it. I told him that I had some grease (Dow Corning 3451) at home and he said that I could use it but, it was over kill and pricy.

both of my outter rear axle wheels were RUSTED SOLID..... however, the circumstances were a bit abnormal.... i took the two stocker outer rear axel wheels and moved them inside and put on two new aluminum wheels on the outside.... the new ones were slightly smaller... like 1/8" which may have contributed to the inners going bad.... funny thing is... the bearings are MOLDED IN so its a complete replacement :cry: why did they do that?

There wasn't any grease in my skid either... but the dealer new i was going to swap the track right away (1.25") just like you... i gave him the benefit of the doubt for that being the reason why they didnt grease it.. dont know for sure... :roll:

you're right about this site being great... especially when people share their information.... and not pretend is some kind of 'secret'... :wink:
 
I'm a proffesional mechanic (cop cars!) & been riding Yamahas for years. The axle bearing (behind speedo cable/pick-up) & idler wheel brgs seem to last about 3,000 miles. You can increase this by the "injection" method mentioned or you can pop -out the bearing seal with a pick & clean (carb or brake clean) & re-pack with a synthetic grease I use MOBIL 1. good at all temps ! do this at pre-season prep & ride all year :wink:
 
I work on Paper converting machinery, and a few years back we switched to Mobil synthetic gear oil and Mobil synthetic grease. And the failure rate is nil! :D
These machines run 24 hours a day 7 days a week. So Synthetic lubricants are without a doubt the way to go 8)

Dave for those of us who have not done this...what you say to do is just insert the needle BETWEEN the seal and the inner race?? OK...what is this seal made of (seems like plastic)? I am going to do my driven bearing (behind my secondary) like this...Is the seal rubber or plastic? Do you just leave the small hole as is or do you plug it with silicone or something? Thanks...RXWonder
