Ok, I just installed a clutch kit, cleaned the clutches with brake cleaner and then went to put it back on the trailer from the grass in back of my house. The belt was slipping and smoked a bit. I found out my emergeny brake was on! :o| Dumb a$$! Then as I was started to put it back on and it slipped a bit when I got it almost all the way up a tilt trailer.

I guess I am just double checking my work. Do you guys think it was a combination of clean clutches with maybe a bit of residue, clutch and belt getting hot from slipping with the emergency brake on and a slight drizzle? Do I need a new belt? I just don't want to get to my first ride of the year and find out I need something done.

You need to sand the sheaves with 400 grit sandpaper and then wash them in soap and water along with wire brush the sides of your belt and wash them with soap and water.

if you really smoked your belt it will vibrate a bit at high speeds, but if its minor you can buff off the glaze with a wire brush. even when you buy a brand new belt (dont matter what kind of belt) sneak into the house when your mom or wife aint home and wash it with scalding hot water and a wire brush in the sink. this gets rid of any oil or residue on the belt, and will keep your clutches from getting that glaze on them as well.

To clean clutch sheave surfaces get a green scotch brite cleaning pad. Remove belt and start sled use scotch brite to clean primary clutch while running BE CAREFUL DISCLAIMER until visibly clean. Clean secondary with scotch brite and wipe both clutches clean. If using a new belt first wash with 409 or soap and water. New belt break in should be 30 minutes of moderate riding then rewash belt and your ready to go. Cleaners even though they evaporate will soften rubber or can make a gooie residue I personally don't use them.

haha i wrap a red scotch bright pad abound a wooden dowl ( 1 inch wide, a foot long) start the sled and run it up and down primary while its running. i'll never put my hands in there haha

I wouldn't recommend sticking anything in the clutch while the engine is running.

Plan and simple...It's not Safe!

I've always cleaned mine with a scotch pad moving all the way around the face in a "V"pattern, perpendicular to the shaft. Running a pad against the face with it running doesn't accomplish the cross hatch effect. After scuffing it I do a final soap and water wash.
