What causes the belt to squeal? Every time my sled idles it starts squealing. I checked and it's the proper height above the clutch. I've never had a sled do this before.

Measuring belt height is not accurate, belt deflection is. Your belt is too tight, belts differ in length................

belt is short, squeels on the face of the primary. common with yamaha's. adjust the secondary delfection by lowering the belt in the secondary with shims. with the two strokes we had an external adjuster available from MPI and maxximum performance.
the new large retainer bolt doesnt allow for this. wish someone would retool for the different secondary retainers. that was a great feature to have. you could infinately adjust the belt to make them last longer. ski

Would this have any affect on belt wear, i.e. would it cause belts to wear a lot faster or start peeling cords earlier?

I only hear my belt squeal when I am going down a hill off throttle.

Suppose to wash the belt with mild soap before using and it reduces the squeal. Also, make sure the washers are out from under the 3 bolts behind the secondary.

Anyone know the answer to this? Would the belt being a little too tight cause it to start fraying?

My vector's belt squealed when it was new. I just let it go until it wore enough to quit on it's own. I put almost 4,000 miles on the belt before I had to change it due to a flat spot. I replaced it with an aftermarket belt which seemed to squeal even worse than the OEM so I removed the three shim washers on the back side of the secondary. I removed the secondary to remove the bolts but I think you can do this on the sled. after the new belt wears you can reinstall the shims. I tie strapped them together under the hood so I wouldn't misplace them.
