Kachess
TY 4 Stroke Junkie
I just replaced my belt for the first time in 2200 miles and found the new belt squealed obnoxiously at idle. I called the dealer and he said the three screws on the back of the secondary that set the sheave spacing often wear. This results in the belt riding out on the secondary and squealing on the primary. Sure enough, I removed the washers under the screws and the noise stopped. They suggest installing shim washers inside the secondary to establish spacing. Anyone else have this problem? I knew a guy with a phaser that always squealed. He spent time and bucks realigning the clutches and never did stop it.

What those bolts actually do is adjust for the wear of the belt. Adding shims lessens the effective length of the bolt so the sheaves come closer together. Removing them makes the bolt longer and keeps the sheaves apart. The spec is to have the belt ride a bit above the sheaves and allows for the belt to be even or a bit below the top. This has allot to do with your takeoff since it means you start in "a lower gear" the higher the belt rides in the secondary. If it sits lower, your have a "higher gear effect". But remember that the higher it rides in the secondary, the shorter the belt becomes. This is why you hear it squeal - it is tight around the primary clutch.
You may need both shims and the bolts themselves.
