I have an 08 Nytro MTX 153 that I just acquired. The clutches are heating up and I smell rubber like crazy. I notice a belt has been blown badly prior to me picking it up because of fragments in the belly pan. What could be wrong? Would simple adjusting clutch alignment with shims do the trick?

I was just having the same issue. First make sure your clutches are aligned. Make sure your belt is sitting in the sheaves properly so that the belt sits about 1/16 on top of the secondary. This can be adjusted by shimming the three bolts behind the secondary. The three bolts could be also worn and are inexpensive to replace. What worked for me was changing to a Arctic Cat green spring in the secondary set at positions 1 and 0. I was blowing on average two belts a ride and after I installed the green AC spring and shimmed the clutch it has been fine.

Check your offsets, deflections, etc.
Nytro's make a lot of torque and can eat belts, especially in heavy snow situations.
Who knows how many miles were on the blown apart belt you found inside the clutch cover, I wouldn't worry too much about it until you see how belts ae wearing for you.
I bought a couple of 8DN's (stock belts) and am running them in now. Seemed like you could find people touting Ultimax's and 8DN. Both sides seem to think the others are crap. Overall, I like he clutching setup I have with the 8DN and I could buy three for the retail pice of the Ultimax. I put a good 80 miles on one the last ride out in about a foot of heavy pow, high rpm riding.
Seems ok, I'll update if I have any more failures

edit: nevermind. Looks like I need to add some spacers to the bolts on my secondary.

Thanks, I am not used to smelling rubber after a ride. I did one run on the lake doing 145km/hr and there was some serious belt burning and hot clutch. I had to slow my riding down considerably and still would smell rubber. The conditions were hard pack lake with about 2 inches on loose snow on ice.
The belt is squealing a bit when idling so I need to look into the secondary shims/screws and figure that out. I am just hoping the alignment is true and that the engine is not twisted out of alignment from the mounts (if that is even possible).

Also check track tension and Hyfax. Basically just that everything in the power train is moving properly and no additional drag. A buddy left the parking brake on one time and burnt through a belt before he realized what was wrong.

It was more like yards not miles - he's not the sharpest tack in the drawer. "I wondered why I couldn't go very fast"
